Everywhere in SWLA, you use a CC, they want to charge you a service fee surcharge. I thought this crap violated their agreement with the CC companies? Who the hell walks around with a wad of cash or a check book anymore?

This is some small business privilege crap right here and I’m a huge proponent of supporting small/local businesses.

I bought some equipment this morning that ended up being around $1K and they wanted me to pay a service fee. That’s aggravating.

where you been for the last few decades baw?

They wanted a check. I laughed my arse off and told them back in the 90s and 2000s, the last thing a business wanted was a check and risk it bouncing.

you do realize that this isn't the 90s or the 2000s anymore? They just scan the check electronically and initiate the transaction immediately.

That service has a similar cost to credit card processing

but 99.99999% of folks who own a cash register prefer cash. The implications are obvious, so I wont go there.

so you're saying that these pillars of the community might not report cash income?

Was going to buy a utility trailer.
Didn’t find out till I questioned an extra 3 1/2% charge at the time of sale.
Said it was a service charge for paying with card.
Didn’t get the trailer. Pissed me off me off that they were trying to slip than in.
If they would have been upfront about it, it wouldn’t have been a thing.

It's cheaper than credit card processing fees and also cheaper than paper accounting.

I charge 3% for any card purchase over $500. Why should I pay it so you can use your card?

I also don’t take Amex. Had a guy try to dispute $9000.00 in charges for services rendered. It took me almost two months to get my money.

Price came to $120 something more than said price.
When asked why, said 3 1/2% charge for using card.
Wasn’t told about that beforehand. How can that be being up front.
To me that’s poor business practice.
That’s all

You anti-cash people always crack me up. Cash is and will always be king. You dont realize how much money you can save by paying for things with cash.
Was just getting a haircut yesterday and my barber who is older but not overly old but isn't hip with technology went to the women's Louisiana softball tournament and walked up to the gate with CASH in hand and they could NOT sell him a ticket. He was told it was all digital that he could purchase one through his cell phone. He had to get help.

It's against their agreement with the CC companies, Visa and MasterCard allow anyone to report a business that charges extra for using either card. Repeated charging of fees will get their license revoked from both companies.

You can always refuse to pay the service charge too, while pointing out it's a violation of the card company policy. If more people pushed back, this would not happen. But you chose to comply.

Are you telling me the Cash and Credit/Debit difference is a violation?

It’s in their merchant agreement, they are not allowed to pass the CC fees on to their customers. They can raise prices, but not penalize you for using your card. I know of only one business that had their merchant account closed bc someone reported them, and a few that were contacted by their processors letting them know that they were in violation of their agreement and re educated them on what they could and could not do.
This is the exact reason I dropped out of that bullshite and moved to Square. Had a guy put $32,000 on a card once. It was going to cost me $1100 so I added it to the bill. The card company said I couldn’t do that. frick Dem!

What pisses me off about the extra fee (often 4%) is some cards fees are less than 4%.

So essentially you ran across a customer that tried to steal from you. So you outlaw AMEX? AMEX is mostly what I pay with but in this case it was VISA.

They all have minimums, bars have minimums, just for this.

A gas station by me even charges you less if you pay inside with cash vs at the pump.

shite even paying for school they charge a 2.5% fee using a card. And that's on thousands of $
