Has consideration been given to extend 565 in Huntsville to Interstates 22 and 59?

I can’t find any articles, but a Corridor V appears on some long term planning maps. It would seem logical to connect Interstate 22, Florence, Decatur, Huntsville and then east to Interstate 59. I do realize as slow as interstates are built that if planning stated today it would take at least 50 years.

I take that route sometimes from ATL to Memphis since it is more scenic/fun to drive than I-20/I-22.

There is no need to build an interstate between Huntsville and Hammondville. The traffic is not there.

I haven’t seen any plans to do this. They only recently restarted work on the northern belt-line around B’ham. I think it was 2014 when work first started on it. They worked for maybe a year or so and then work halted until just recently, like earlier this year.

The rate that interstates are constructed here in Alabama is just painful.

They need to add a third lane to both sides of I-65 from the Tennessee state line all the way to Mobile before they do anything else.

I would provide a faster route between Chattanooga and Memphis. Don't know how much that is needed though.

Your reasoning is actually pretty sound from a transportation planning perspective.

The confusion is that there are two different “Corridor V” designations:

1. Appalachian Development Highway System Corridor V already exists. It runs generally from the Memphis area through northern Mississippi, the Shoals, Huntsville, and onward toward Chattanooga, mostly following US-72 and related highways. It is not planned to become a new interstate in its entirety, although pieces have been upgraded over the years.
2. Some long-range planning maps and unofficial concept maps have shown additional interstate-quality corridors in northern Alabama, which is probably what you saw.

A route connecting:

* I-22 near the Shoals
* Florence
* Decatur
* Huntsville
* then east to I-59 (or eventually Chattanooga)

would make a great deal of sense because it would:

* Connect Alabama’s three largest north Alabama economic centers.
* Relieve pressure on US-72.
* Provide a direct freight route between Memphis, Huntsville, and eastern Tennessee.
* Better connect major employers like aerospace, defense, and automotive manufacturing.

The biggest obstacle isn’t engineering, it’s funding. Building 150 to 200 miles of new interstate today would likely cost well over $10 billion and require decades of environmental review, right-of-way acquisition, and construction. Even projects with strong political support, like I-22, took roughly 40 years from authorization to completion.

So while I don’t know of any officially funded project matching the route you described, it is exactly the kind of corridor transportation planners often preserve on long-range maps. Those maps frequently identify corridors that may not be built for several decades, if ever.

I would be interested to see the map you found. If you can upload it, I can tell you whether it’s an official planning document or more of a conceptual transportation vision.

The southern belt line on I65 south of B'ham is finally progressing. The damn beach traffic in summer months is freaking brutal though.

The biggest problem is the damned Birmingham airport is right in it's way.

I've taken I22 a LOT and it's amazing. Not a lot of traffic on it and speeds up getting to Memphis area significantly. It's also not finished on the Memphis side and it ends in what looks like Syria on a good day.

The worst part of our Interstate system is it was great before we doubled in population. Now it's woefully undersized. They really need to add 2+ lanes to most interstates and Most need 3 lanes at a minimum throughout the state.

I-20 is miserable driving on the 2 lane sections. Taking the interstate is rarely the most efficient way in any decent size city.

Hell you can't get anywhere between Shelby County and Nashville Tn because of all the construction. Not to mention spots between Mobile and Montgomery.

I got to go back to Pittsburgh Pa and Im driving because flying is so effed up not to mention expensive. I'm gonna look long and hard at some maps and try to avoid as much of it as possible by turning NE at Bham or further south, and go up through NE Alabama East TN Va and West Virginia and avoid those big cities too this time.

Louisville, Cincinnati and Columbus Ohio are nightmares.Pittsburgh itself is weird with bridges and a tunnel

At least that is Alabama, if it were Louisiana. You might have it in a hundred years.

This will be me waiting for I-49S to be completed.

Thanks, the map I saw was the Appalachian Development Highway System Corridor V. I agree with the Chat response that it would benefit all the industry in the northern half of the state. Another two I would like to see kick off are the completion of 49 from Lafayette to New Orleans and extending 85 from Montgomery to Meridian.

From Utah to Alabama last week and it was the absolute worst stretch of the drive.

Needs to be 6 lanes from Tennessee at least south of Montgomery. That covers Huntsville, Cullman, Birmingham, and Montgomery. That stretch from Montgomery to BHM is the busiest, and most of that has been slowly addressed.

Once you get about 20 minutes south of Montgomery, there isn't a real need year round, but it would be nice to have in the summer months.
