It had been going downhill before Katrina but Katrina more or less killed it, and took New Orleans with it.

I have been going to Bourbon Street since the 1970s. I started going to Pat O’s and places like that in 1976 and even when I was a young teenager I used to go to the Quarter with my friend whose dad owned an establishment on Bourbon Street. We often got hotels there for Mardi Gras. I still go to the Quarter because some of my favorite restaurants are there. Therefore I consider myself qualified to answer the question of whether it has always been “trashy “.

Answer
Not even close to the way it is now.
You used to be able to walk the streets at any hour of the day and night without safety concerns. We would stay in the bars until they closed at 4am and walk blocks to our car which was usually in a shell lot at the Jackson Brewery where we parked for free. These days I would not do that without an armed security detail. It is getting worse and worse.

Do you mean the 1870’s and 80’s? You’d still be off from New Orleans’ prime, but you’d be closer.

The city has been in decline in almost every aspect since before the civil war.

It’s always been trashy, but there was rarely any crime

The criminals used not cross rampart - for the most part
I'd love to believe this, but would certainly welcome any supporting evidence.

Bourbon street has been trashy for as long as I’ve been alive.

Bourbon street has had a dangerous element for as long as I’ve been alive.

A lot of these posters just didn’t give a damn when they were 18.

Mid 80s it seemed like the big fear was losing your wallet. The trashy was there but not the danger of bodily harm.

Now there is that fear

That street is not for locals. Locals avoid it at all costs. Its for tourists and wild animals (some locals) who can't control themselves.

Early 2000's you could walk around by yourself no worries and meet up with people at different places. There's no way in hell I'd do that now.

not so fast. look at some of those crime stats from the 70's & 80's. It's alarming.

crime stats

are generated by arrests, they used to have cops about every half a block in the quarter, not so much anymore

Willie's fried chicken and daiquiri shops repeated over and over on every block it seems.

Bourbon during the day used to be a lot of t-shirt and novelty shops mixed with some restaurants. At night those would seem to be swallowed up by the strip clubs, sex toy stores, and bars.

I didn't even know people could eat fried chicken and walk or drive a car. Spoiler. They do.

No shite on the NOPD for thumping skulls. You could get your arse beat and still walk away to finish your evening in a bar somewhere. Nowadays, they are scarce and not planning to do anything other that make it to the end of their shift.
