Push started a car. Used a hand crank on a car and tractor.

FYI

The first year car license plates issued in Louisiana. 1915. Years ago, Louisiana required front and back plates. I’ve seen old plates with a hole in them, for the crank to be used for starting.

The more you know.

I haven’t done it, but I rented a Ford Model A in Cuba and the driver started it by crank.

But have you ever watched someone do it with an auto transmission?
Surprisingly it does work, but it's got to be hell on the drivetrain.

We did it with old chevrolet powerglides, with the magic speed being 35 mph. we discovered that the Plymouth transmissions would not push start.

Yes, grandfather would rebuild them in BR. I had to turn the crank a time or two after it died in the road.

Yes. It had an electric starter but a hand crank as a backup if the starter went bad or the battery died.

Several people in our car group have model t’s and watching them hand crank them over at shows always draws a crowd.

Grandfather had a model T. Hand crank only. Was given the chance to hand crank it when I was 7. Barely got it to turn over, needless to say it didn’t start.

So I guess I have hand cranked one, but not hand crank started one.

He got rid of it in the mid 80s. That was a fun parade, riding around in car in the country.

When I was a young boy, in the 50's, I hand cranked a tractor. We couldn't afford an automobile.
I have seen other folks hand crank a ford Model "A". Maybe the 40's model Chevy, owned by my older brother had a hand crank.

Same here. When I was a teenager and I had just started driving (early 80s), a good friend of mine had an old 70s Volkswagen bug that would rarely start on its own. Back when everyone had real steel bumpers, it seemed like one of us always had to push his car with our car, get it going at a good rate, and then he would eventually be able to start it. We just became used to it. It got to the point that we always sort of expected it.

I know there was a certain way you had to grip the handle so if it kicked back it wouldn't break your arm.

Never hand cranked one but when I was a kid my grandfather had a Ford truck with a floor-mounted starter switch. I used to think that was cool as heck

No, but I have hand cranked ice-cream. It's in the same ballpark, I promise you.

My dad had and old assed tractor that had a hand crank. He wouldn't let us start it because he said that if you didn't do it right you could break your arm.

I’ve hand cranked a couple of tractors. Actually have one from the early 50s with a gasoline pony motor that’s used to crank the tractor’s diesel engine. The pony motor has a battery starter, but it can also be hand cranked.

Other than that, I’ve push started just about everything with a manual transmission. Used to keep my 4 wheeler backed up on a small hill for that specific reason.

Nah, not a car, but did kick start a couple old Harley’s that I’ve had…

I'm old, but not so old I hand cranked a car. Like you, I've kick started many old motorcycles that never came with electric starters. A 59 HD Panhead, 66 BSA 650 and a 65 Triumph 650 all had to be kick started.

That damn HD would sometimes kick back and if you weren't ready, it felt like your knee would be thrown out of joint.

Those older British bikes at that time had the shifter on the right side of the bike and the brakes on the left, unlike Harley's and the Jap bikes.

Then the industry decided to standardize it and the Brit bikes switched to comply so all bikes shifted and braked on the same sides.

My Dad's '53 Buick 8 started by pressing the accelerator.
