Has anyone else noticed a massive increase in sobriety "content" over the past year or so?

the wannabe influencer girls I know from high school/college are all tying it out. see more and more articles about it lately. it's big on instagram and tiktok. lots of "alcohol is the new cigarette".

i wouldn't think much of it but it feels extremely inauthentic and trendy. the people i actually know who are doing it were never big partiers or drinkers for the most part, yet they're talking about how life changing it is.

of course people who have problems should go sober but a lot of this feels like stolen valor.

eta: also I have to imagine a lot of these newly "sober" people are probably taking a cocktail of stimulants and anti-depressants every day, so claiming sobriety isn't fair.

When folks do something that makes them feel better they like to talk about it. If they're feeling better then good for them. I'd rather listen to somebody talk about positive changes than the whole woe is me I'm a victim type stuff.

ETA: they may have drank a lot more than you realized. I agree with you though, it can be exhausting listening to it.

I’ll say what I said in my thread. There are so many schticks out there it is totally bizarre. Everyone has some sort of gimmick.

ETA: not trying to be negative about it, whatever helps people. But I have a feeling if they’re doing it as official content let’s not pretend there probably isn’t money in it as well.

Alcohol should be illegal like every other drug.

FIFY. If it was, you wouldn’t have the problems we have now.

People need to check their sobriety privilege

Alcohol was invented because food would go bad on its own and god would say “looks like you’re not gonna make it through the winter but you can get drunk”

People that are gonna make it through the winter and don’t need to get drunk shouldn’t brag about it to normal people

It’s time for the government to roll out fentanyl light for the discerning American who doesn’t want to feel but is watching his waistline

My wife (no pics) is a therapist at a residential women’s center. Since Covid, check in for substance abuse and eating disorders remains unprecedented. History will not look favorable toward the draconian knee jerk reactions with lockdowns, it’s it’s already here and showing it’s the ugly face of consequences. 2020 messed a lot of people up and I think that’s why you’re now seeing sobriety

Or barking about legal weed or the benefits of magic mushrooms for any ailment.

It's the newest addition to the Mom blogger/"influencer" qualifications.
1. Autistic kids
2. Left leaning views/women empowerment
3. Sobriety

Do y’all think autism is caused by acetomenophen in utero?

I don’t really believe that but one thing we do know is that alcohol in pregnant women has no ties to autism. Instead of making a quiet intuitive kid that sticks to themself, kids affected by alcohol in utero are the opposite. This whole “don’t drink while you’re pregnant” thing is probably the cause of the rise in cases

Accurate. I went from drinking on the weekends to drinking most days during the lockdown. After weight gain and being always slightly hungover, I'm finally back to my pre-COVID relationship with alcohol where I don't feel like drinking every night. But it took 3 fricking years.

It’s because these ‘influencers’ always want to have a big market. There’s a ton of people out there who are abusing alcohol and drugs so their content applies to a lot of people.

It’s all about money and attention. That’s the gist of it

Alcohol is perfectly healthy if you can drink one drink per day (female) or two drinks per day (male). If it is red wine or other healthy options

But, no one does that or can do that. It is too addicting. Plus, it is usually mixed with all kinds of sugary substances.

So the vast majority of drinkers should just quit all together if they want to feel better.
