Has anybody traced their family tree on Ancestry

I have been working all week on mine.
The earliest I have traced is a grandfather that fought in the Revolutionary War and it has the General he served under in North Carolina. Says he was the son of a English man and I have his name. That is far back as I can find.
Took 6 generations for me to finally trace a grandparent that was born outside of Louisiana. The above guy was him and he moved to Louisiana and he had 20 kids. Also, my maw maw's great grandparents had 14 children. I have their info too. This is just a mess tracing all of this and filling in this tree. It is going everywhere.
My most interesting finding is there is a cemetery in Louisiana that is 20 miles from where I grew up. So far I have counted 44 relatives all buried there. So far I have had 3 relatives die in the Civil War. Two in Louisiana and one at Shiloh.
Has anybody else done this? Any interesting findings?

How much did that cost, and have you traded in your leiderhosen yet?

My grandmother on my fathers side had a legit lineage done, it goes all the way back to 1500's. The report is about a 2" thick binder
But recently I got my dad an ancestry DNA test for christmas, for both maternal and paternal. results should be in, in a few weeks.

I'm on my free trial on Ancestry right now. I will upgrade when I finish everything to explore records from Europe. I think it will only be like 50 dollars for a month subscription.

I have no idea what this is.

Have you done the DNA cheek swab test? I've been interested in hearing what people's results are with that.

Traced mine. Back from Louisiana to Arkansas to Georgia to Great Britain on my mom's side.
Dad's side went from Louisiana (various parts), to Italy. One family from Sicily, one from Bologna.

Your mom got a cheek swab test last night

How much outside research do you need to do to supplement the ancestry research? Will the 14 day trial be enough to get a pretty good history? Are you looking at both sides of your family?

I've done pretty well on Ancestry. Another thing I recommend is the Find A Grave website. I was able to tie a lot of the info from Ancestry with the info from Find A Grave and match it all up with info I previously had from my great aunt.

My brother does marketing for Ancestry, and they gave everyone on his team free lineage tests last year.
On my dad's side, we've been able to trace our lineage all the way back to 1700's Bavaria, and my mom's side is also German.
The Ancestry results came back and said we're British. Since Ancestry is very confident in their testing, I now don't know WTF I am.

Yep, I'm using Find A Grave too. It has a ton of information on your family. Once I have filled that in on Ancestry and I am finding information that distant relatives have previously researched and posted. Info such as the Revolutionary war info I found.

I have been using Ancestry for about 10 years now. Had a good foundation for the tree from family members who spent years doing it the hard way, but Ancestry has allowed me to get copies of a lot of the actual source materials as opposed to just a hand written tree/data sheet from the 1960s.
Between my wife's family and my own, I have close to 5000 people in my tree, going back into the early 1700s in a lot of cases.
I have at least two, possibly three great-great-great-etc. grandfathers who fought in the Revolution. I have a total of 25-30 Confederate and 3-5 Union soldiers who fought and died or fought and survived the WBTS.
We just did the DNA test - mailed them off just before Christmas. My results came back yesterday, still waiting on hers. The really cool thing is how it matches you to other Ancestry members who share your genetic markers and the probability of them being related and to what degree. It seems to be at least somewhat accurate, as it matched me to a 1st cousin's account, as well as a few other accounts where I recognize the surname and can see the family connections.

Started 20 years ago. When Ancestry dot com came out it accelerated the process for me. My data to that point was from my maternal aunt and great grandmother. Ancestry allowed me to fill in some blank spaces in their work which spanned 60 years between the two of them, but their data was pretty complete going back to the 1600s.
I tackled my dads side with limited information. The verbal record only went back to my great grandparents and it was limited to what my grandmother could recall. Ancestry allowed me to get every set of GPs going back at least 5 generations from myself. Did in about 6 months what would have taken 20-40 years of committed research pre Internet.
Twelve documented Rev War soldiers and one Tory. One GF, Garland Lane, from Bedford Va was a member of Washingtons bodyguard (COC Guard) and was present at Cornwallis surrender at Yorktown. Several War of 1812 militia members from Ga and Tenn but records are harder to come by for this war. Fourteen Civil War Soldiers.

Didn't pay for it. Took probably 6 hours to figure everything out though.
Dad's:
Mexican consulate
O&G guy from Oklahoma
Mom's:
Friends with J Q Adams
Islenos
That's as far back as I felt like going (mid 19th century). Everything gets blurry from there, but it was all free and not that hard to find. Basically, other people do the work for you, and you just click around and figure some shite out. One thing I thought was cool is that people go and take pictures of headstones and post their location online

Traced my Mom's side of the family to Toulouse France. Apparently, my xxx grandfather was Mayor there.
Was run out of town. Could never find out exactly why.

Sounds like someone in your family tree was adopted.

Just be aware that many of the trees on Ancestry are produced by individuals with little regard for substantiated details.
When you find one with your ancestor being royalty, it's probably one you wouldn't want to place confidence in.
Find-A-Grave is a great resource though.
