I have been researching in the ancestry site for over 12 years. Only advice I have is to not believe the family trees many people have posted on this site. They did little hard research and just accept what others have posted.

just a quick story on mine.
my great great grandparents moved from new York to iowa. from there to Kansas
In Kansas all five of their kids died from an illness. they unexpectedly had one child, and from there they moved to Louisiana.
that one child was my great grandpa, who had several children.
I have the dresser that was hauled in the wagon buggy during the 1800's, from their move from New York. it has the furniture company's name in it.
People were tough in the old days, we are spoiled brats...

Wow, just took 2 minutes to find something I've been looking for over 2 years.
Did not know of this site.

I got my paternal side all the way back to a great grandfather born in Martaize, France in 1601.
My maternal side to a great grandfather born in Belgium in the 1840s. When he arrived in Louisiana, he purchased several slaves, one of them being one quarter black, she became my great grandmother. They had a bunch of kids together, and during Reconstruction, he married her.

Tees posted on Ancestry dot com are full of errors. Errors posted in one tree are simply copied and added to other trees. It gets to be a pretty big mess.
It takes a lot of work to verify source documents to build a valid tree.

This^^^
When I first started I was just taking any tree at face value. Realized there were some inconsistencies and then went back and had to remove the obvious errors. There are still a few links that I have questions about, but the timelines and other events fit well enough that I've decided they are more likely than not a direct ancestor of mine.

So far I have had 3 relatives die in the Civil War.
That's tough. I hope you don't lose anymore. It's looking like the Union may withdraw soon.

My grandmother's brother makes this a hobby of his and to my absolute shock (
), my ancestors moved here to Louisiana from the nordic countries.
Gee, where could my white ancestors have come from?

When you find one with your ancestor being royalty, it's probably one you wouldn't want to place confidence in.
Everyone who ever does a family tree will claim a royal or someone famous.

My uncle traced my fathers family all the way back to York in 1000's
My moms family has been traced back to Scotland

I agree. If there is any question at all I will not put them on my tree. It is frustrating though when you are 90% sure based on circumstantial evidence but cannot find a document proving the link. I have a few like that I hope to one day prove with documentation. One in Rutherford NC but the courthouse burned down and all of the marriage, probate records and wills were lost. Sadly, a lot of old courthouses burned down and the information therein were lost forever.

Yes my younger brother spent a summer doing it off & on for our family.
Found out that we came from England, landed in Alabam, fought in civil war, then eventually moved to LA. Also changed the spelling of our last name somewhere along the way after moving to the States.

Never had to use it. One of the few benefits of coming from a Mormon family. The women in my family have us traced back to Viking times.

I don't know. The only interesting thing that ever came of mine was the guy I linked in my earlier post, and he wasn't really anything more than an extremely minor pirate/mercenary in the middle ages.
