20% is only the standard for people to lazy to do the math for 15%.

I meant to upvote your post but hit the downvote in error. Wish we could change that when it happens.

Your 10% tipping doesn’t solve the minimum wage problem for servers. You should eat at home. These people work in service industry job, that does not mean they are your servant!!!

We pay for their food and their employees wages while they struggle? It’s all a bunch of bullshite

It’s astounding that we have so many $60,000 millionaires here on the OT. I thought everyone here was a baller.
I worked in the service industry. Hard not to leave 20%. You really have to be a trash server to get less.
Percentages are subject to change based on tit size.

Laugh all you want. I live in the land of millionaires, but it is "off-season". Doesn't matter how nice a place is, the waitstaff DGAF. Try again

Wait staff in Nola at least typically makes 2.13 an hour. Let that sink in.
None of which is my fault.
Waiters have got to be the whiniest group on the Internet. I tip and tip well usually but don’t really feel the need to have that point constantly brought up in every tipping post. Don’t like making $2.15 an hour? I didn’t like that idea either so I simply picked a different fricking job.

they accepted a job in the service industry to serve people
IT LITERALLY DOES MEAN THEY ARE THERE TO BE MY SERVANT
all you jackasses want to bitch about tipping when these people are making more money per day then the average whit collar worker takes home
its not MY JOB to pay them a fair wage, that is their employers responsibility yet none of you asshats seem to understand that fact and instead want to insist its the customers job to pay the waiters car note and rent

Nobody is forcing you to go out to eat. This is just how the industry works in this country.
But it doesn't have to. Just pay them a living wage and make tipping optional.
Historically speaking, the American tipping system is a holdover from post-Civil War railroad service when black porters would carry your shite for "free" and hope for a tip. No reason that system needs to continue but it has.

What kind of shitty white collar job do you have?

A lot of restaurants may not be able to afford to pay that. Most have a hard enough time staying open now.

Obviously, they would incorporate labor costs into the price of the food. I would prefer that, because at least the menu would reflect the actual cost of the food.
The customer then knows the actual price, and the waiter isn't dependent on the goodwill of the customers. Meanwhile, the restaurant breaks even. Seems like a win-win-win.

Because white trash post non stop in these threads that they don't want to tip is why they complain.
And get your shite straight. The OT tells me that nurses, teachers, and oil field baws are the whiniest group.

I will just say that eating out in Europe is much cheaper than in the US, and they operate on the exact system I described. Service isn't as good -- very true. But they also don't rush you out of the restaurant to seat the next party.

Damn some of you are stupid. You think the average server at 90% of the places are making great money. Think about your average customers around the country and think about how stupid they are.
I'm just damn glad I'm not or have never been in this industry. You can disagree with how it's set up all you want to, but it is what it is. Either tip a decent amount or take your fat arse to Taco Bell or McDonalds.
I'm just glad I don't have to dine with you all for the most part.

I feel like you are mixing up normative preferences vs. empirical reality. Sure, the system is what it is, and I tip accordingly. However, it doesn't have to be that way. In fact, it shouldn't be that way.
