Has 20% become the new standard for tipping in this generation? If so, why has the percent changed?

Not for me.

They get a standard 15. If they were really good, they get 20. If they sucked, they get 10.

Only a couple occasions in my life did I have to leave nothing.

If by new, you mean at least the last 15 years, sure.

Yes. I'd rather err on being generous. If you really think about it, we're usually only talking the difference between a few bucks.

Common Core Math. 20% is easier.

I’m usually somewhere around there. Double the whole dollars including tax.

I typically tip 20%-25%. Give a dollar or two for pick up. Sometimes go higher for small bills because I don't like to tip less than $3-$4.

I figure 20% then round down a dollar or three. Usually ends up something like 17%

I personally tip 20% or more to make up for all you other cheap assholes who order 6 refills of sweet tea, extra ranch, special alterations to menu items, to go boxes for everyone, and then split the check 8 ways without telling up front and leave a shittty tip.

Yes.

15% has become the new sub standard service tip.

Plus waiters and waitresses don’t make shite so why not give them an extra 5 bucks on an already $80 tab.

But the waiters don’t get that money. Hence the reason for a tip. Maybe you don’t understand the food industry.

It's been 20% for non-poors for about 30 years.

menu items becomes more expensive, thus tips increase while remaining at same percentage

Is this so hard to understand?

I mean, I'm a generous tipper and all, but we're talking about percentages here. This is how percentages work. The tip increases proportionally with the increase in food costs because the tip is a percentage of the food cost.

Unless your bill is hundreds of dollars, the difference between 15 and 20 is not much. I consider that I'm doing good and lots of wait staff is college age.

You should NEVER leave no tip. This makes the wait staff think you forgot. If you want to make a point, leave a penny or some lose change.

How do they not get the money? If they make minimum wage who else is receiving their wage?
