as bad as this is, as a houstonian i find it hilarious that governor abbott told everyone we should evacuate the other day and our version of broomes, sylvester turner and his right hand "disaster specialist" francisco sanchez chimed in and francisco tweeted something along the lines of dont listen to governor abbott and LOCAL OFFICIALS KNOW BEST
and now we have a disaster and less than 16% of houstonians they said have flood insurance and worse they're all stuck while more and more rain is coming and he could have told people to leave but chose not to

Would evacuating make this change?
We'd be pulling bodies from submerged cars on 45 and 10 if six million people were told to leave. Even the NWS said they've never seen something like this before. Your 20/20 hindsight is noted.

A mandatory evac would have made things worse in this case. Easily. Can you imagine the people stuck on roads that flooded? Either because of blocked/flooded roads and running out of gas. More lives lost and more emergency personnel needed for those cases. Do you even remember 12 years ago? Multiply that by 100.

I agree. I have never liked Turner but I don't think he was in the wrong. He's getting blasted for it too it seems like by national news

Those people that had resources to leave could have left had they chosen to. At some point, you've got to think about personal responsibility.

I just think its insane that in a city that floods as often as we do, there isnt a bigger push to get flood insurance, worse, I bet that 16% of houstonians with flood insurance, if that number the news said was true, those 16%, I bet 80% or more are the wealthier people in town who probably could have handled rebuilding without insurance. It's crazy there isn't a bigger push to alert the other 84% of homeowners that they need flood insurance.

I agree. Can't evacuate all 6 million people. If really low lying then get out for sure. But there would have been people stranded all along the roads.

You don't realize the number was pretty small in BR also right? A lot of people just don't carry flood insurance.

My parents are in The Woodlands and have said their subdivision is still ok thankfully. If they haven't flooded yet I pray it doesn't happen as everything else gets backed up.
