I love how I get zero credit.

In all seriousness, I'm glad so many are reading in the path and getting good information. The TD weather team is strong.

Greg postel on the weather channel says the last time he read wording like the wording from NWS Corpus today was during Katrina.

Yeah they make big passes in an X configuration. They're trying to measure the expanse of the wind field, and they'll get center updates every hour or so.

"No evacuation orders have been issued for the city and none is being considered. Rumors are nothing new, but the widespread use of social media has needlessly frightened many people today."

I think this is mostly Ed Emmett. And I always feel he does a good job in these situations. The Rita evac has been the only clusterfrick, and I don't remember if that was his call or not.

Useful site for houston folks is the harris county flood warning system site, full of all the rain and stream gauges throughout the county. This is the mobile version so not sure how it would show up if you're on desktop.

it seems like in the past when a slow-moving hurricane approaches land, it often tends to hover up the coastline for a while before actually going inland. Is that a thing or just my imagination?

They can sometimes.

Friction with the coast and shallower water along the coast can have the back side sort of spin faster and skirt the the coast for a bit instead of going right in.

Ivan is a good example of this effect. He was heading for Mobile, hit the shallower coastal waters. The north side got spinning slower than the south still getting the good fuel. The difference in momentum pushed Ivan east at the last minute, sparing Mobile and crushing Pensacola.

I mean....one of the last times we had a major hurricane strike the U.S. was Katrina. So that's not surprising.

They're right. Unless you can filter the crap on social media it's best to stick to NWS/Local govt.

Can one of you with experience give me the gist of it? I admittedly did not know this had developed into something serious.

My grandmother is in Houston @ MDA for treatment, is everything okay there? Should I make plans to go get her? I know it is late in the game..

How much rain are we expected to get in SE LA?

I'm sure it has been discussed, so sorry in advance. 175 pages is just a bit overwhelming at the moment.

no idea what this means....maybe some one can translate

Basically it means that a wider eye will ventilate the storm better, and the wind field expands... ie, the storm will get bigger.

She is in one of the safest places in the city. She will have power, food, and drink. No threat of flood waters getting her.

She is safer than you.

Yeah that may have been a bit too casual.

That being said, their chance to evacuate on a large scale has come and gone. They'll kill more people during evacuation than the flooding would/will.

he is talking about a text that was going around about an insider at the Harris County meeting saying that the city and feds were working with the media in order to keep panic down.
