My F150 can tow just shy of 13,000 lbs. That should be sufficient for 99.999% of any towing a normal person would do. Unless you haul some heavy loads there is no way to "justify" getting a 3/4, unless you just want one.

You will run out of payload long before reaching your tow max. Unless you have the max payload edition.

you would be looking at a 1950lb tongue weight with a load that large.

Better check those numbers. Sure that is for total weight of truck and tow? Can't see how a 4800lb truck could stop towing 13K. I have a 6500lb 3/4 and I have a very hard time stopping 12K.

That is one big reason to buy a dodge with a real diesel, Cummins engine. Still running a 2004, 5.9L that has 225K. Never been in the shop.

Oh, still getting 22.3mpg if I drive 45 or 85.

If you level out the 1/2 ton and go bigger on the tires they look pretty good with a full size bed. I kick myself constantly for getting a crewcab short bed. The damn thing is worthless. And most of the crewcabs with the full size bed come with the max tow package.

thanks buddy, rub it in!

ETA: you'd probably double that gas mileage if you drove it 120-130mph, btw

Yes and had just about burn tires off a trailer a time or two stopping when some arse pulls out on me.

the biggest load I carried with the 250 I mentioned was about 6500 lbs. using trailer brakes, was a little underwhelmed a how that load ate its lunch

Not if you own a ford

You might as well get ready to start dropping 1500 on injectors every other year.

Get the 1 ton because you’ll be maxing out your payload rating on a 3/4 ton with a 10,000 gvwr and it’s only another $1000ish difference, especially if you think you’ll want to pull a 5th wheel (up to 25% of total trailer weight will be on your truck). The total towing weight will not be the limiting number.

The gas F350 with 4.30 rear axle is rated to tow 15,000, payload around 4K, and you’ll have a heavier truck to control the trailer on the highway and it won’t cost much more than a max tow loaded f150.

My toolbox is too big for the short bed trucks (hits the fender wells), and it's probably 750lbs when I have it fully loaded. That's just too much for a 1/2 ton if I'm carrying around other stuff or pulling a trailer. Throw in a pallet of sod or 1/2 cord of wood, and it'll be on the bumpstops.

Eta: My 04 2500hd can handle much more weight than my 08 F250 could. Seems like it can hold 1k more. Pretty odd, but on several occasions, it has proven to be true

If you’re not pulling a lot of hills the gas 3/4 ton will get you by.

On the camper side if you are pulling any distances at all or frequently go 5th wheel way easier to pull.

I am not sure how much the payload max increases when you get the full size bed and tow package on the half ton but I think it is a decent amount. Also they made the beds wider and longer, I am talking about the GMs. But 750 is a heavy load for the bed of a 1/2 ton.

100% this.

A 2500 gas chevy pulls great on flat ground only. Any hills and you will be running 25 mph.

It will be interesting to see if they go away from the 6.0 now that Ford is going to a big block 7.3.

Unless you are towing heavy consistently there is no reason to have bigger than a 1/2 ton besides compensating for a small dick.

Ah yes the old “if anyone has anything better than I do they must be compensating” argument.

I am flirting with the notion of selling my silverado and picking up a new gmc 2500 or 3500 when they come out later this summer.

I've only had 1/2 tons so I can't speak from experience, but GM's 2500 trucks are bipolar to me. They're like Tundras - some are the ugliest trucks you've ever seen, but then you'll see one with the right mods and tires and it's the best looking truck you've ever seen.

I personally love the look of the F150s, but the F250s are hideous.

I beg to differ, an oil change for my F350 diesel costs $200.00.
