My Grandfather had the full honors and coincidentally a flyover as we carried him out of the of the hearse, I’ll never forget that it was a special moment.

I know they had no idea of the situation but when they walked past my cousin with two Purple Hearts to give my Grandfather’s gold digging whore of a wife the flag- it rubbed everyone the wrong way.

that's one of these unfortunate situations where the rules don't fit the situation, the flag goes to the spouse...I think if the vet designates a recipient in writing, but I'll have to check..

When my grandfather passed, there was a flag folding and taps with bugler. As someone on the first page mentioned, the process truly brought everyone's focus and attention to a similar place.

It was striking to watch three solemn soldiers, two who still looked like teenagers, and think of the 93 year old man being buried who had been young just like them when he wore the uniform.

Amazing grace bagpipes and taps
Difficult to listen to from beginning to end without tears.

When the Marine passed me the flag from my father, I couldn't help but cry.

Thanks Butch

My father had a small Air Force honor guard at the cemetery. It was simple, but very nice. He would have liked it.

Flash forward 7-1/2 years and we're at the cemetery again, burying my mom. How, I don't know, but my sister's family managed to be late. So the rest of us are standing around waiting for about 15 minutes. They show up and we start to pull the casket out of the hearse a pair of F-15s roar over our heads. A couple of us start laughing and get some odd looks from the funeral home employees. We explained that my father would have been pissed that we were late and REALLY pissed that mom rated a flyover.

What was really a trip about is if my sister had shown up on time, we probably would have been leaving or gone before the jets flew over.

My parents were from N.O., but had moved to the Northshore when my dad got sick. They still have a lot of old friends in NO, so we did a wake there and had the funeral mass and a reception the next day in Madisonville. We did a quick family only interment on the 3rd day because we didn't want to have to drive back and forth on the day of the funeral. 50' from hearse to tomb, the priest said a couple of prayers and we were off to Mandina's for lunch in just a few minutes.

I don't believe in the supernatural, or very much in coincidence either, but I have to admit that the timing was odd and fortuitous that morning.

Funeral details were the majority of my job when I was stationed in Baton Rouge. There were times where I swear we did multiple ones everyday. I only had to present the flag a handful of times though. Playing the fake bugle was more my speed

As a former Drill at Fort Jackson in 2001, one of the many details we would encounter during cycle breaks was Funeral Detail. I remember there were Saturdays when we were doing multiple funerals in a day. Weather would be 100+, sweat rolling, and it never bothered me because I was so damn proud to be leading that task. Hard to explain unless you have gone through it.

get the flag from your local Post Office.
correct. My grandfather had a service at Arlington last month. My mom got the flag from the post office. Arlington has very strict requirements about the flag size and where it’s made. Anyway the flag was made by Bulldog but the deminsions were wrong. Arlington ended up providing the flag for the service.

Knowing my father, pretty certain he didn't put it in writing. Especially since his passing was unexpected.
According to my stepmom, he had asked her at one point if she would be upset if my brother and I received the flag. My stepmom requested it and they actually presented a flag to both of us. Not sure if it was against the rules or not, but it was a nice surprise and definitely appreciated. I knew at the service they were going to present to us at her request, but assumed it was going to my brother since he is the oldest.

Presenting the Flag can be pretty tough. My first one I looked the widow in the eyes and got all choked up. As difficult as that was nothing compares to CNO duty. I have been shot at with mortars, RPGs, rockets and bullets. I have seen friends in my unit get hit (luckily they all survived), but none of that compared to giving a loved one (parents or spouses) the worst possible news that they could imagine.

Thanks to all of you who have done the Military Honors funeral detail or performed CNO or CAO duties.

I hope I NEVER have to perform that duty!!!

Offshoot of subject, wolfhound what do u think about going back to pinks and greens?

Back to something more related....guess I’ll have to buy a new set of blues so I can join up with the volunteers doing funeral duty...
