You can’t fire someone for taking their allotted time off.. off.

It doesn’t matter what it’s for, it’s their time. This is why I typically don’t even tell anyone why I’m taking off.

“I’m on PTO Friday” the reason why is no one’s business

But considering the OP doesn’t know the difference between advise and advice, I’m going to assume this is made up

I always tell my guys I don’t need a reason. If they’re taking PTO or a sick day, then just use it, and let me know you won’t be in. I don’t need to know why.

This shouldn’t matter, he should’ve just told you that he’s taking a sick day with no further explanation.

I don’t believe you, but it is astounding the reasons people have in 2025 to not be able to come to work vs 10 years ago when it was unheard of to even have those reasons cross your mind, much less have the audacity to ask your boss.

I just recently hired a mid twenties guy doing some research for us and he's been a great hire until this week.

this guy requests for a mental day off

Well yeah today's world is different. 20 years ago if someone requested a day off they would be respected and not immediately judged as a shitty employee regardless of how well they work.

Do you offer a mental health day?

If so, let him burn it. Remind him that he has none left.

No we have 10 sick days and 10 vacation days. To me this is not being sick!

So his only mistake was telling you a reason?

The weather here is too nice for work. I'm fricking off at noon tomorrow to hit the beer garden. Is that a good excuse?

If he's on his 90 day to 6 month probation he's gone in my book.

does he get discretionary sick days? Why worry for his reasoning if he's within those?

I come up with silly reasons to use mine since I rarely get sick.

you aren’t very smart or a very good manager.

Me: I want a personal day off
You: no problem, sick day or vacation day

Probably the opposite. Dude heard about Val and went on a serious bender that would make the Ice Man blush. He doesn't need a mental day, he needs a hangover cure!!!
