bet you are the a-hole who you can see clearly making fun of the new guys at the gym instead of attemting to be nice and offering them a pointer or two.

no, I'm the a-hole who works out solo and doesn't worry about anyone else but me when I'm in the gym. I don't critique, advise, judge, or otherwise really worry about anyone else- unless they ask for my help.
The only people I pay attention to when I work out are people who may be in my way or pretty girls.

I probably picked up this habit in 9th grade football team, it was all dudes lifting, not a female in sight.

We got a hardo over here! In ninth grade, you probably weren't lifting much more than the girls your age.

HS strength and conditioning coach instilled
1) re-rack
2) if you can't put it down in a controlled manner, you have no business lifting it. ( or words to that affect)

The older gym patrons need us to re-rack.

Of course, if you are using your high school or college weight room, then leave the 45 lbs plate ON, because there will be no old broken people there who need us to re rack.

What about for leg press? Still unacceptable for leaving one on each side?

Free Weights = I Completely re-rack

Machines = Sometimes i'll completely re-rack if I notice a lot of ladies in the gym. If it is just a bunch of guys, sometimes i'll leave a plate on each side.

Uh....they are still dropping the weight in a controlled manner. When they don't, it's called crossfit.

I hate you clowns who leave plates on the bars....then the bars bend.

But it's cool....you're the badass who doesnt touch his chest and drops the dumbbells from max height for your badassness.

Unless someone is standing there waiting, and they say, "Yeah man, just leave those plates on..." you should re rack all of your weights.

This. Also, people that don't rerack their weights are the same people that don't return their shopping cart to the corral. There's a special place in hell for these type of people.
