Its not always bad but doing it before warming up and before physical activity can increase risk of injury due to making the muscles too stretched.

Guys who don't touch their chest on the bench press don't bother. The guy that bothers me is the usually mid-30's to mid-40's guy wearing the generic "Navy Seals"/"Army Ranger"/"Special Forces" T-shirt who stands in the middle of the gym (I go to a 24 Hours) and practices his elaborate martial arts katas before sitting down, cross legged and going into some meditation. I've been going to the same gym for about 12 years and have seen about a half dozen guys do this over the years. Must be reading the same book of Douchebaggery.

If his arse was on the bench that would be fantastic power lifting form.

Which is proof that unless you are training because you are in actual power lifiting competitions, it is stupid to do power lifting. Look how bad that must be for someones back. It would be the equivalent of Jim Bob going in the gym and throwing 30 crossing routes and 50 fades as a workout. What is the point?

Actually if your legs are properly planted it's much easier on your back. Same goes for your shoulders and elbows. You will require wrist wraps though.

Oh. Can you please give me examples of when static stretching is a bad idea before a workout and why?

Your thread is pathetic by the way. Going to the gym and judging some guy for not going all the way down on bench is what keeps the average guy out of the gym.

It could be argued that heavy weight training is bad for you in general.

On a flip side, back in the day, power lifters would do these 'half reps' with more weight than they usually would on occasion. It was to get there body and joints adjusted more to the heavier weight and in the long run allow them to build up to it faster as their bodies would become more comfortable with it.

I used to do rack presses when I was younger because my triceps were my weak link. They work wonders as do rack pulls for people who have problems with the lockout on dl.

Lots of stupid comments on this thread. If you do a bench press, touch your chest. If you are worried about injury, make sure you tuck your elbows in and don't flare them out. No excuse not to do a real bench press.
