I saw a video on Twitter just now where Blackwater was advertising a brand new thumb trigger for one of their rifles. They claim this innovation makes the user 30% more accurate right out of the box.

Here's the video in question:

What if you hold it sideways?

I’ve seen that. Can’t speak for its accuracy. Probably not worth the price.

ETA: It probably requires a special BCG to go along wit it.

Seems like it could reduce side torque vs a regular trigger. But if for any reason it was shot without being properly shouldered, it would probably do some damage to your thumb.

Man, that thing looks like an accidental shooting waiting to happen. I understand that sticks and such can still get into a traditional trigger guard, but that thing's just an open hole you stick your thumb into with a button in it.

As opposed to an open hole with a hook in it?

Yeah. If a stick gets into the trigger well, it's got to come in sideways and move backwards to pull the trigger or come in from the perfect angle from the front where it missed the front of the trigger guard, but gets to the trigger to push it. You can see the picture I posted. All something's got to do is get shoved straight into the thumbwell to contact the trigger and can push the trigger with the way the trigger surface is angled.

There might be part of the mechanism I'm missing or some type of safety that isn't obvious, though. Maybe like a grip safety that won't release the trigger to move unless you've got a good hold on the weapon.

That actually seems pretty smart to me as it would eliminate pull.

Yeah, it's definitely an interesting idea just from a standpoint of the physiology of the hand. The motion of the thumb is way less connected to the motion of the fingers than the fingers are to each other. This idea more effectively decouples the action of pressing the trigger from the action of gripping the weapon and providing for stability while firing.

Interesting innovation. I wonder how it is for people with arthritis in their thumbs. On a low recoil weapon it is probably fine, but if there was a big kick gun say a 300 win mag I would think your thumb is going to pay a price.

My trigger finger is way more sensitive than my thumb. Also, I use my thumb to activate/deactivate the safety. I can’t imagine a safety that would have to be manipulated with another finger all without moving the thumb at all which would have to be sitting on the trigger.

Jp rifles makes a “roller trigger” for those of you that can’t pull straight back. Works ok. Not a huge difference though.

What would releasing the sear have to do with the BCG? That makes zero sense. As far as people thinking something could get in there and fire the weapon, it sounds like y’all think he is pushing with his thumb and that’s not how it works. He is pushing the trigger down with his thumb. An object would have to get into the hole and then push down. Not that likely.

But them claiming it is “30% more accurate” is stupid. A trigger helps the shooter be accurate but it doesn’t make the rifle accurate or inaccurate.

in the video the guy points out that there is some sort of safety that you have to engage with the index finger before it can shoot

Almost like a butterfly trigger. Except covered. I imagine there'll be room for improvement since it's a new design.

Seems like it would eliminate alot of complexity from the trigger group. I like it alot.

Can't wait to see the equivalent game controller design.

Interesting. I think it’s pretty common knowledge that the use of the trigger as it always has been is a huge factor in accuracy. Squeeze vs Pull.

Another form of a trigger is a pretty cool idea.

I was completely uninterested after watching the video. Comments now have me interested in trying it.

If this becomes a thing, it’ll reduce dudes sucking on the barrel of a gun to blow their brains out...
