My dad was alum. Glad he is not around to see this - we joked that this would probably happen but now it actually has. Holy Cross nickname is Crusaders and mascot is ...WAS a knight.

our local d3 school is the crusaders as well and just dropped it to cru. no mention whatsoever of crusaders and they left it at that.
also crusades were partially a response to Muslim invasion. never forget.

Well, to be fair, it's not like the Crusades were a proud moment for Christianity/Catholicism. A lot of it was inspired by European monarchs simply wanting to get their names in the history books. Lots of unnecessary violence, in-fighting, persecution, etc.
The best that can be said of the Crusades was that it slowed down Islamic advancement into Europe. But the stand much later at Vienna in 1683 was the true turning point.
So, in short....

What most SJW's seem to think is that the near east was some peaceful place that had always been Muslim before those evil white crusaders came and just started killing everyone because the Pope told them to.
Most of those areas had been Christian and Roman far longer than they had been Muslim-ruled. Islam had conquered modern day Israel in the mid 600's. The Turks only conquered much of modern day Turkey from the Byzantines in 1072. The First Crusade was launched in 1079 as a counter-attack against the Turks.
Using religion was just a way for the Latin Pope to convince Western European lords to help the Greek Orthodox Byzantines who had just lost the bulk of their army, all of their cavalry, and most of their valuable economic territory in the Battle of Manzikart.

How many millions of deaths have occurred in the name of religion have there been in history?

I come from a long line of Vikings. We were pretty bad, but let's face it, we didn't discriminate. We didn't care if you were Christian, Moslem, Jew, or something else. We treated everyone equally... badly, but equally. So, if your mascot is a Viking, you are cool, and we promise not to protest.
FWIW, we didn't have horns on our helmets. No horns.

Proudly fighting Muslim infestation since 1096.

Ask anyone who mentions this WHY they think that The Crusades are something to feel bad about.
Hell, ask them WHAT they even think the Crusades were. Guarantee they deflect or start attacking you because they are embarrassed

I don’t know if it’s so much lives being fought in the name of religion or basic tribalism - dressed up as being in the name of God. The world was very violent place back then. Hell it still is.

The Massachusetts school's president, Rev. Philip Boroughs, said in a letter to students that "the visual depiction of a knight, in conjunction with the moniker Crusader, inevitably ties us directly to the reality of the religious wars and the violence of the Crusades.”
Uh, yeah, I'm sure that was the point. I suppose it was too soon to adopt such a name and logo after only a few centuries.
Meanwhile, the religion of peace continues to murder Christians and burn their churches on the other side of the world.

Crusades were a shame because the jihadists were such great guys. They spread Islam across North Africa through bake sales and such.

People today still mourn the great loss to humanity when Charles "the Hammer" Martel won the Great Cake Walk at Tours.
The motivation for France's eventual colonization of North Africa had roots in the need to rediscover the recipe of that delicious Moroccan Chocolate Coffee cake won at the famous cake walk.
