quote:not necessarily. A smaller caliber bullet shot like that might go through the first part of the door and then just bounce around inside.
I think you can rule out bullets. If that was a bullet, there would be a hole on he outside of the car door, too.
I’ve seen that before too. Buddies truck to a stray handgun bullet through the door. Didn’t go all the way through and you could hear the bullet rattling around when you open and shut the door

From the photo, it looks like the "orange" could actually be copper from the jacket of a small caliber round - most likely .22. The angles look like what one might expect to see from a right handed person holding a handgun downward in readiness - just prior to a negligent discharge.
I would be looking behind the door panel to learn more.
I would also be looking at that deep trough for lead residue - which is easily tested.
But I am a suspicious kind of guy.

I know exactly what happened, seen it 100’s of times.
A teenager in their first car. That’s what it is. I’m sure of it.

I think you'll have to get a .22 rifle and shoot directly next to the original mark, to see if it leaves a similar marking.

literally what a tiny thing to get your panties in a wad over

If there’s no concurrent damage to the door then that would have had to happen with the door open.

if only there were someone in your house who with 100% certainty knows what happened…
now your only option is to have the internet guess for you

Not if the door was open and firing down toward the ground. That's what it looks like.

It’s way too small to be a fired round. Even a 0.177 is way too big. IDK.

Yep. My kids have driven older, hand-me-downs in high school. I'll get them something a little newer for college as long as they have shown me they will take care of it. Otherwise, they can drive beaters to college too. Most HS kids are going to frick up their first vehicle at least a little. No need to give them a 30-40k vehicle to do it to.

Lokks just like damage left when a dumbass ex brother in law of mine opened his car door and a copperhead was right there. He had a .22 pistol and starting blasting. One of the marks left looked like that. A couple more were more obvious.
Snake lived until I got out and stomped it's head. He got bit by one about 6 months later when he stuck he hand down a hole he saw a baby rabbit go into and start squealing. No lie. There's more, but I don't have all day.

He slammed something in there. It looks bullet sized, but zero chance a bullet hit at that exact path and didn't do a ton more damage.
Saw this was addressed and could have come from driver side seat. Honestly, kid wouldn't be driving the car until he face me an explanation.

Did you say your son is playing on the varsity baseball team?
Does he wear metal spikes?
He probably got in or got out of his car with his spikes on.

That damage doesn’t look fresh. Could have happed weeks ago

It must have been there awhile for the rust to start. Bottom of the door have a matching mark?

Got shot by a small caliber bullet?
definitely
ETA: Take a look at the metal piece that slides into the buckle of the seat belt. It could have gotten hung up and the door was slammed on it.
