He ran over something that was partially out the car. I had something similar happen with a phone charger once.

Slammed something in the door extremely hard. Hate to accuse your son but I'd bet he knows what caused it and is afraid to tell you.

Thought he could have slammed it in a rock, but the damage seems like it would carry lower where it would have had to be sitting.

Doesn’t really make sense, but it looks like someone was jamming some type of rod under the door. Or, it was a bullet.

Seat belt buckle latch plate?

(edit) added latch plate, the part that goes into the buckle.

It’s way too far forward for that. Maybe he threw a sports bag with on his floorboard then shut the door…but I’m not sure any have metal buckles…I’ll look.

2 questions

1) was it a used car and you might have missed it previously? If not, how long since you looked in that area of the car?

2) any markings on the outside of the door at all?

Definitely seems like an object was closed in the door of the first picture. The last picture is in a different location and is indicative of the type of dmg that occurred in the first that has more detail. Seems weird he would be denying it though if he accidentally slammed something in the door
I would address it with him that you are concerned it was something like a bullet and hopefully that scares into telling you the truth
