Nothing wrong with having some pride in your high school.

Now, if you show up to a Friday night game wearing your letter jacket we are having a different discussion.

In laws went to Madonna (i like to spell it this way) and Warren Easton
...
This was in the 50s. And yes, they have told me this multiple times.

Mind you, I'm not from NO, so I wouldn't care what high school they attended.

I always figured this was a thing because so many people go to private high schools in NOLA given the extreme lack of acceptable public schools. In most places, you know where someone went to high school because they went to the public school in the district they grew up in, so there's no need to ask about high school. In NOLA, kids who grew up on the same street go to many different high schools.

You’re not from here that’s why you don’t understand it. Knowing where someone went to High School gives you an automatic cheat code of where they came from, backgrounds, similar experiences, mutual friends, enemies, sports history, etc. Since you asked, I went to a all-boys Catholic High School in NOLA ;)

this is somewhat correct - years ago there were even more private high schools so it was even more specific - and in my grandpa’s day - even knowing which public school a person went to, said a lot

Sense of place like few other places. High schools are attributes of one’s place like noses are of faces. Insular nature of New Orleans means Mom & Dad, Uncles & Aunts, Grandparents, et al all likely have a place in dat high school history, too. Where they met, what they did, did not do together…over generations.

The 1963 football game in City Park between Holy Cross and St Aug (for example - if I got the teams right)

It’s a status thing and they judge people over it. I’m not sure people are obsessing over it necessarily. People in Baton Rouge are proud of their high schools too, and do things like yell “catholic high” like an a-hole.

not necessarily in NOLA - because even the poor, ignorant Irish trash had their own Catholic high school to go to

I don't care where anyone went to HS. As long as it wasn't Jesuit

I always ask when I'm over there just to find out if they went to one of the small schools who we played in football in HS. We were a scrappy but sucky small MS Catholic school who had to play in an outmatched/outmanned public school district and got beaten on the reg, but when we played equal sized schools in the Chalmette/Nola/Metairie area we had decent and fair competition—because they had to play ironman football like us.

NO is verrrrry provincial and distrustful of those who don’t get it. Just admit you’re not local and you’ll avoid the fire.

In the years I’ve been here, it seems like this conversation comes up amongst my friends who are locals a lot. They talk about their High Schools all the time or ask others where they went to school as a basic getting to know them question.

Since most people that ask this question likely went to a private school it's essentially a method of establishing rapport with the other person. If you know where they went to school and have a ball park of their age then you can mention mutual friends, teachers, experiences, etc. Some of the schools are extremely fraternal in that they have huge alumni support/community that helps with professional networking. It's no different than several "elite" colleges.

Of course if they are from rival schools then you can talk smack as well.

Dude I don’t even need to give you a specific place. I’ll just say it’s weird EVERYWHERE else

He is talking about in Alabama. It is weird to him and others from Alabama because they ask where you went to Junior High School as that is the highest level of education that most have in that state.

Why? If I find out someone that I’m speaking with is from my general area, I ask where they went to school. Not in a prodding way, in a “I’m interested in you and this conversation” way. Just seems like it’s kinda common courtesy.
