Depends on morale of the company. People tend to go above for good morale and do less with poor morale. You over work people, under pay them, treat them bad, make the better workers pull the weight of DEI and you get what you get.

Many employees deserve a pay cut rather than a raise. Crap workers all around.

Too many places are all stick and no carrot, then wonder why the mules don't want to pull.

This is true. I have 8 guys that work with us, I can tell you they all have positives and negatives, but the ones that are most flexible and hard working get the bulk of the extra work. It comes with OT, but many times I just dont feel like dealing with the ones that I know will have excuses, or other BS for not being able to do extra. But finding 8 guys that all work hard is impossible. The ones that dont like the hard work are also the smartest ones that implement things correctly more often.

Some people are just worthless, I've been in Corporate America nearly 30 years and have seen all kinds.

Some people have self worth and a strong work ethic.

Some are what we refer to as "DoLittles", they do as little as possible daily to get by.

Yeah, and what do you think happens to all that when you screw them financially for years to the point they are struggling just to make it?

A major plague of businesses in America is turning into sluggish bureaucracies as they grow and age. Eventually succumbing to start ups and “disrupters” (another name for new competitors who don’t have that problem yet).

This is what losers tell each other to feel better. YOU are responsible for your success. If things are as you say at your company quit and find a better culture. But to imply that it is useless because that sick culture is ubiquitous, is a coward’s way.

Baloney! These are the very people we promoted at our company. I can name a dozen two-digit millionaires minted by our company because they took initiatives that were not necessarily their primary responsibility.

I've been there. I was underpaid and started off going above and beyond thinking it'd get me ahead. Because of this I'd always get saddled with extra work. Was always frustrated with coworkers doing the bare minimum. After a couple of years I realized going above and beyond was going to get me the same as doing just a little bit more than all the coworkers doing the bare minimum. There wasn't any point in working my hardest. Glad I left that place, I hated feeling like that.

Been in my current role for 3 years. I'm making close to 40% more than when I started. Feels damn good and motivates me to give it everything since I'm actually getting rewarded for it. The folks I work with are also highly motivated and it's a lot of fun working with folks like that.

Man it’s the way they were raised!! Our entire society tells men and boys to avoid responsibility at all costs….. do you expect them to change when they get to work??

Is this some kind of epidemic? Every time I try to get things done I get these responses like “well my boss didn’t tell me to do that” or “I sent them an email about this problem so I don’t get egg on my face” and the famous “I gotta cover my arse”.

How is it that so many people can take a paycheck and avoid effort all together for fear of failing? I see it as an incredible weakness in most men these days. They won’t even try to solve a problem.
What says the OT?

Sounds like you're an overpaid buffoon trying to get underlings to bail your arse out of hot water.

i won't lie, I've fallen into this rut at jobs before.

There is nothing worse than repeatedly trying to solve something or recognizing issues that are met with "that is just the way it is" or "cost too much to fix"

I've pretty much only worked for family businesses. The entranced retardation by the old boomer administration that refuses to accept any change would remove that ambition from Winston Churchilll

I think there's something mature about knowing your worth and not trying to scramble to do everything just to make yourself feel like a "good employee."

Not to mention, I'm also not gonna talk out of my butt about something I don't have full knowledge of. I'd rather direct the customer to someone who has more knowledge on the topic than me rather than BS an answer.

Upper management peeps love nothing more than to sit around and deflect all all issues that come to them. They will also be the first to point he finger when something is wrong.

In todays world that is 3/4's the battle unfortunately. I deal with it daily at my job. Nobody wants to make decisions when issues come up, but when a decision is made they will be quick to criticize it.
