Yeah, that's a good way for your kid to get a bad blow habit.

Find a place where your career is in demand first. My wife and I are considering relocating to the Knoxville or Chattanooga area in a few years. I prefer medium sized cities, the hills and mountains and more seasonal weather.

Live in Jackson county and work in Huntsville. Land is cheap as hell, and it gets prettier the further in you go.

Indianapolis is a nice area and reasonably well priced cost of living.

Have friends in Fort Worth who really like it and like it much better than Dallas. Have friends who live in and around the Franklin/Nashville area who absolutely love living there. I'd consider Franklin if I had to move.

Rockwall, tx. 20 Miles east of downtown Dallas on I30

I second Rockwall. I have relatives that live on Kentwood. Had Cliff Harris for a neighbor. Nice guy.

Mostly late 80's- early 90's neighborhood. The town is nice and clean.

You don't have to, just like you don't have to accept the truth.

All of Williamson County, especially West of I65 and north of Franklin Road, is simply an amazing place to live, work, and raise a family.

Large cities in the South I would consider:

Nashville
Tampa
Dallas
Atlanta

Mid sized cities:

Greenville, SC (Metro listed at 884k)
Knoxville, TN (Metro listed at 861k)
Chattanooga, TN (Metro listed at 550k)
Huntsville, AL (Metro listed at 441k)
Fayetteville, AR (Metro listed at 525k)

All 5 have the mountains/outdoors (In some degree) Great career opportunities, Moderate weather and a relatively low cost of living. All are relatively safe. Tennessee not having any state taxes is a huge bonus.

I should add that Asheville is another great mid sized city/ place to visit, but it's not some where that I personally want to spend more than a weekend. The hippy/ultra liberal vibe around down town is cool for a few days, but I'm always ready to bounce after we make our way through most of the breweries. We were at Marble slab in downtown Asheville ( some what across from Wicked Weed) 2 weekends ago and got served our ice cream by a womam probably in her early 20s. She had to walk around the counter to clean off a table and I notice that she has on shorts and has hairier legs than I do. I just laughed to myself and ended up getting the eyes from my wife. The city is a little bit like Portland for me. Great to visit, not some where I would want to live.

The Raleigh area is nice. It's a little more liberal than your average southern city but the burbs are fantastic. 2 hrs from the beach and 2hrs from the mountains.

If you're interested in the DFW area, then look at the Grapevine/Southlake area. The area is centrally located between Fort Worth and Dallas, so access to either Dallas or FTW is relatively short when it's not rush hour. Easy drive to the Rangers' stadium, Jerry World and Six Flags. Fantastic school districts (if you have kids.) Beautiful women everywhere if you're single.

My neighborhood is like a forest in Grapevine. Trees everywhere and great nature areas for biking, fishing, running and boating. Minutes from Lake Grapevine and the two wonderful cities of Grapevine and Southlake. Tons of the best restaurants and shopping....some of the best in DFW. The downtown area of Grapevine is a great place to visit for events, dining, wine and shopping. Very cool downtown. Southlake Town Square is another go-to place in the immediate area.

Dallas and Fort Worth have a great nightlife but the truth is the whole DFW area has good nightlife spots.

Also, we have a lot of LSU folks here.

I want to move to Maryville, TN. It's maybe smaller than what you are looking for, but it's close to Knoxville and right at the edge of Smoky Mountain National Park.

Absolutely beautiful area.

North AL and East TN would be places I'd consider.
