Grand Isle and Hurricanes

How strong of a hurricane would it take to basically flatten Grand Isle?
I went down there a visit yesterday to see a buddy who is fishing in the Tarpon Rodeo. I think my list trip that way was over 20 years ago.
If a Katrina kind of bitch hit about 10 miles west of there is it over with for them? How would the areas a little ways up from there to Houma make out?

Grand Isle is pretty flat.
Not many mountains much less hills.
Realize you are asking what a direct hit from a Category 5 would do to an area.

I heard that was the case as of noon today. Kind of a let down for everyone I'm sure.
I noticed some of the hired strippers walking around yesterday afternoon, but I didn't feel like staying to see any of the activities. How does that work? Guys just hire them to come strip and do kinky stuff on their boats at the dock?

Haha, no idea, but I’m sure with all the neck tat guys down there, these strippers will do well this weekend.

What part of Galveston is that? I went to Galveston two summers ago to visit a friend and it seemed to be in great shape.

When the right storm skirts the coast from Southeast to Northwest and makes land fall at the right angle and speed it’s going to wipe Terrebonne Parish off the map.

Who built that house?? I want him to build me one

A cat 3 at the right angle would ruin it. Go back and look at what Betsy did it. Way more erosion since then.

Andrew tried that and failed......

IIRC in the late 1800s there was a second island down there, next to Grand Isle and with some real resort hotels. I wonder if there are any good articles about what it was and how big the hurricane was that obliterated it?
Anybody?
Anybody?

It would depend on on construction, newer cement structures would take a beating but would still stand up during any storm.
Older stick built structures could disappear in any storm depending on storm surge and wave action.
As far as the rest of the area, it really depends on the angle of attack. Gustav Cat 2 at landfall passed right over the Houma Thibodaux area. But Gustav was a fast mover. So Surge was only an issue to areas Far East of the center. There was some surge that covered most of the island but there was no catastrophic damage.
Now this month’s home brew storm that hit area came at bad angle for the area. It also sat over the area for an extended time. That is why Time is also a big factor in storm surge, the longer a storm sits the higher storm surge levels even for a weak system. Had the storm been stronger Terrebonne could have seen more issues. Lafourche would fair better as they have higher levees than Terrebonne.
Grand Isle faired well through Barry, but a storm like Betsy in 1965 nearly cleared some parts of the island.

And still loss a lot of beach. I realized this weekend that the beach behind my uncles camp will be gone in my lifetime.

Probably has something to do with which way the water pushes up

That looks like the Bolivar Peninsula, in Galveston Co., but not the City of Galveston.

If I'm the company that built that house, my business card would be nothing but that picture and a phone number.
