It's $20. You did the right thing and I would have felt a little weird myself.

Yep, I'm a people person. I can tell when something is genuine or not.

From Chick Fil A to a South Texas Tamale Cart, tills are always balanced/reconciled at the end of every shift/day.

She'll realize at some point in next 24 hrs her cash in the till matches sales, aka you didn't steal from them.

If that's the case, order another one and politely ask if she remembers you from this incident today. She'll probably say "yes" and you can then explain to her how terribly sorry you are for the misunderstanding and how you felt bad because you could tell she legit believed you had given her a $5. Assure her that you did give her a $20, but in good faith and because she ultimately made things right (and of course, because the food is good), you want to tip her out of gratitude for her understanding.

Case closed and you'll both feel better the rest of the day. And it doesn't need to be a $15 tip. A solid $5 is probably more than she ever gets anyhow.

Assuming they are halfway decent at managing their place, when they balance their register at close today everything should be even and she will realize you weren’t lying to her.

I feel ya Marge. That you would rather give the small “ win” to a working family when you have been blessed just shows your humanity and that you get it. Next time you drive by , you should make their day with a courtesy , or buy 20 from them. It’s the little unexpected kindnesses that sustain and fortifies the social contract and the sense that we are all in this soup of birth and death together.

As a cashier, you should always place the bill on top of the register, count the change back, then once everyone is satisfied, put the bill in the drawer. That way someone can’t fast talk you into giving them more change than you owe. It happens more than you’d think.
