Got a breakfast taco at a food trailer this morning, Now I have guilt that I don’t deserve

Was starving for breakfast so I pull a U-turn when I see a taco trailer with an open sign. Order a bacon egg and cheese taco, get told it’s 3.50 So I hand the lady at crisp new $20 bill, 3 new $20’s are all I have on me. She takes a minute at the cash register and hands me $1.50. I am immediately state that I gave her a $20 bill. She looks at the register and pulls out a crumpled five dollar bill and shows it to me and says “are you sure you didn’t give me this ?” I tell her no, all I had was $20 bills. At this point she turns to her husband and says something quietly about being certain that I gave her a 5. At first I thought she was trying to rip me off, but the look on her face and the tone of her voice made it evident that she thought it was I that was trying to steal from them.
She gave me my taco and correct change. But now I’m driving down the road Feeling bad, these people obviously need $20 Way more than me. I wish I would’ve tipped the change, all of it. She was sincere, but wrong, but I hate the thought of good hard-working people thinking that I stole from them and I would’ve rather given them the money. And I have a breakfast taco beside me in my car that I’m frankly nervous about eating .....

Turn around and give them your car. You’ll feel so much better

Sympathy for sympathy’s sake is not mandatory and happens far too often in our super soft society. You have no reason to feel bad for these people

Don’t do that to me man, I feel bad enough as it is. I did nothing wrong but yet that couple truly believes that I just stole from them right now

It's a silly habit, but I always audibly say how much I hand over.

If the transaction really was correct, then there is nothing to feel guilty about.

It’s got a lot of miles on it, but if it breaks down on them? I don’t know if I could live with that

How do you know that?
Could be that the wife just has horrible attention to detail and the husband is aware of it. Maybe that’s why she was trying to explain what happened to him?
If you’re certain you handed them a $20 don’t worry about it. If you can’t stop worrying about it, just turn around and give them the change back. $15 isn’t worth being eaten up over.

I think I’ll start doing that that’s a good idea
I thought about telling the couple about a valuable lesson I learned decades ago as a teenager working in a beer joint, anything bigger than a five you put on top of the cash register until after you make change. That way you don’t trust your memory. It wasn’t uncommon for people to come into the beer joint and try to tell you they gave you 100 when they only gave you a 20

You could tell by the look on their faces, they thought I was ripping them off, but it was a small town I was driving through and they probably figured it would be a bad business decision to not give me change for a 20.
I’ll be driving through this small town two or three times this week on the way to a project. I’ll pry make it a point to stop and get a breakfast taco every time and tip generously every time
I just hate that they feel like I ripped them off,

You ever think that maybe they’re the ones trying to play you for the sucker?
That would be my guess.
Either way, put your big girl panties on, Sally. You don’t owe them a damn thing.
