AN FRANCISCO—Google will keep its employees home until at least next July, making the search-engine giant the first major U.S. corporation to formalize such an extended timetable in the face of the coronavirus pandemic.
The move will affect nearly all of the roughly 200,000 full-time and contract employees across Google parent Alphabet Inc., GOOG 1.21% and adds pressure to other technology giants that have slated staff to return as soon as January.
Businesses from factories to salons and restaurants are grappling with if and when to reopen amid a stubborn rise in Covid-19 cases around the country. Though some offices have added plexiglass barriers and other social-distancing protections, the risk of outbreaks among workers remains.

Why don’t we just extended it until early 2025 so we can keep blaming Trump?

Unfortunately, they are likely up there among the best at modeling/forecasting. Doesn’t mean factually that this drags that long but it’s surely a worrisome indicator

Why would you possibly need to make a decision like that now?

office people, will they work from home?
Posted on 7/27/20 at 7:57 pm to ihometiger
Uh, don’t they all do work from computers? Why the hell would they need to be in an office when they can work from home computer? Makes sense to me.

They can say it’s due to Covid all they want.
Truth is, Google, along with many companies are realizing they can decrease overhead with more employees working from home.
This will become commonplace across America. Even when Covid is diminished.

Places like Jani-King and other janitorial, security and catering companies are going to take a huge hit by the new Work from Home climate.
There is going to be a loooot of commercial realtors out the business very soon too.

Why would you not? It is easier to end that policy than to keep moving the goal posts. Put the plan and investments in place. Plan for the worst hope for the best.

Corporate Class A office space is going to take a huge hit.

Where are these Google employees going to get their sensitivity and racial diversity training?

My employer said we should expect to stay working from home until 2021

Dumb to extend it that long hit the need to work in a specific office space for 95% of their employees doesn’t exist.

Mine is the same... But it's cause I work in the same building as the executives making billion dollar decisions and they are old. I think the building is operating at 15 percent capacity and it houses 800 employees. Been working from home since the first case. We actually went to laptops last year via my boss that everyone hated. Only good thing she did other than quit a couple weeks ago
