My boss is black and uses the term, "people of color" to refer to anyone who is non-white

Calls me "Bossman" all the time as well

Makes my skin crawl

I believe the term that is all the rage with European liberals lately is "Chuckers of spear".

When my grandmaw used to talk about "colored people", she would look both ways and whisper as she said racist things. It was strange because she often did this in her own home when nobody else was there.

Yep. They can't have it both ways. They must change the name of the NAACP then.

At least yours was discreet. My grandmother didn't give a frick. She'd announce her racist comments to the world.

There was nothing offensive about the way she used the term.

This whole thing is silly.

National Association for the Advancement of Colored People.

So you can say people of color but not colored people now. Next you wont be able to say people of color. You can say African-American but some day I'm sure that will be racist too.

Some days I think of a huge wave that wipes the morons off of this planet and society takes a great leap forward.

A rose by any other name...

I will call anyone of you anything I want. If you get offended it is your problem because I am not going to call you anything racist because I don't want to.

It's what liberals do. They love being "victims".

You have to consider who said it and the context. Nothing really racist in this case. Just a slip up.

Victimhood = source of power.

If I can control what you can and cannot say, I have power over you. Slip up and you can be fired or sued.

It's all about power. Nobody currently deemed a victim by the left will ever give up victim status because it pays.

How long has this term been considered derogatory?

Call it political correctness all you want Democrats, but I would contend that "colored people" is immensely derogatory.

At least the black/white/brown/etc. spectrum acknowledges that each ethnicity has a particular skin color.

However, "colored people" implies that white folks are without color. How's that shite fair?

Most here do not think any term that refers to a minority is derogatory.

I think, as a Caucasian American, companies that produce and sell crackers should remove the word "cracker(s)" from their product. I find it to be very racists against white people.

I'll preface this with a disclaimer to say yes, it's obviously absurdly stupid to have the NAACP on one hand, and have "colored people" be sort of a taboo word on the other hand. Again, that's just dumb. So yes, I get the strange double standard here

Now that being said:

I was unaware that this was a derogatory term
Whether you agree with the term being derogatory or not, you have to be living under a rock or very sheltered or naïve to not know this is generally a frowned upon term.

I mostly agree, but again, I wasn't really agreeing/disagreeing. I was just stating if you're any bit aware at all, you know that "colored person" is frowned upon for the most part.

I mean, if I'm around a few black people and will use a term to describe them, I and I don't think any of us are going to go with "colored people"

I go with black, haven't ever seen anyone offended by it in conversation. And if they were, they'd immediately go on my "pretend they don't exist" list to ignore.
