Be prepared for a significant jump in property taxes over Bossier. If you move to an area that is building, your property taxes will go up quickly as new houses are built and sold. There’s no state income tax, but property taxes make up for that. You probably need to look at Celina and areas north of Frisco, McKinney and Prosper.

There is a part of highland park or university park that is not zoned to HPISD. I’m guessing that’s what they’re referencing

It is. There's a piece of the city across the DNT from the main portion that isn't zoned to HPISD.

Good areas to live in around DFW?
Cedar Crest.

I was living in Richardson (near north) which was pretty good, Plano (west but away from Irving) is probably the best bedroom community around Dallas. Stay away from south and east.

Parker County (Aledo, Brock, Milsap, Peaster, and Weatherford) are also nice if the wife can find employment in that area or in west Ft. Worth.
I have a branch of my electrical company in Weatherford. Really nice area. When you get just a little outside the metroplex, you get away from the cookie-cutter feel that every suburb in DFW has:
Strip mall on this street - Best Buy, Old Navy, Target with a Chili's in the parking lot.
Strip mall on the next block - Lowe's, Dick's Sporting Goods, Marshalls, HomeGoods, and a Texas Roadhouse in the parking lot.
Strip mall across the street - Home Depot, Academy, Ross, World Market, and a Buffalo Wild Wings in the parking lot.
Rinse and repeat because you're in the next suburb after a couple more lights. It's like deja vu when you're driving.
Go west, young man.

Is there seriously a significant Gypsie population in white settlement?
They go by the term "Irish Settlers", but yes, when I lived there, they all had houses just outside loop 820 at the White Settlement road exit.
All of their businesses are typical gypsie businesses. Hot topping driveways, roofing, tree trimming. All stuff you can do without any licenses. They never have insurance and they will always take every shortcut possible to them on a job. They are expert con artists.
It wasn't a problem to me. It's not like half the population there is gypsies and they don't really bother with people out in public. They're more menaces to businesses to the point they're trespassed from every business in WS. I'd say there are maybe 100, maybe 200 or so of them, but they just travel in groups, and you always know when you see them. They're the sluttiest dressing 14 year old girls you'll ever see. The boys all look like premature pimps. I never saw any adults with them when they were out.

We lived in Keller for years. A few things to know about pretty much any of the metroplex cities in DFW, but particular in Keller:
1. The housing market will hurt you. They pretty much all (esp Tarrent Co) jack up property taxes to the max every year. Combined with ISD taxes, you will find you can afford a lot less there vs Louisiana.
2. If you like an actual yard, I hope you are rich or willing to drive from very far out. The "over sized" lots in the area are postage stamps.
3. There are a ton of conveniences, both good and bad. Want to go to a particular store? You have tons of options in ever direction... repeated over and over again.
4. Grapevine, Colleyville, Southlake, Trophy Club, Westlake, Keller are your better areas and schools (tack on NWISD).
5. Much of Keller is on its own Co-op for power, meaning you avoid the ERCOT pricing bs that took place a few years ago.
We loved Keller for a long time but their local politicians will give any Louisiana politicians a run for their money. The thing we liked least about there was that they are filling it in - FAST. When we moved there, it was mostly pastures and farms. Now there are virtual apartments (homes even I could jump roof to roof from) and real apartments all over. In other words, it is becoming Addison (which sucks).
If we had to move out that way again, we'd probably go even further west (Aledo) or a bit north (Argyle). If you must live more north or east of Dallas, all I can say is sorry - you're either going to be an a suburbian hell or driving a loong ways, like from Melissa. Don't go south.

Irish travelers and gypsies are not the same, though similar.
If they are actually legitimate Irish travelers and not gypsies this just got a lot more interesting. I didn’t know there were any in america

Depends on what his definition of "very far out" is. Parker County isn't that far of a drive from FW or central metroplex.

Agreed. It's like driving down the same 5 blocks in a row repeatedly.

That was just dumbasses that didn't read the contracts in deregulated areas. They just signed up for the lowest kWh price they saw and didn't know what flexible rates meant. I live in a deregulated area with a fixed rate. My bill doesn't fluctuate.

Has been mentioned a couple of times and been downvoted. It's a good school district, close enough to be convenient, and far enough out to have some rural feel. I don't get the hate.

Since you have time you should check google traffic and/or Waze every morning and afternoon prior to and after 8 and 5. That will give you an idea of where traffic stalls out the most. But need to do it several days to really understand it. Trends will appear over time.

It's a great area but Irving ISD kind of sucks. Ranchview isn't a bad school if you can buy in the Carrolton ISD but all of the great performing Irving schools are magnet except for a few isolated elementary schools.

UT SW is world class in the oncology world. That is a 30 min drive from where I am out in Colleyville (right where it butts up to Grapevine and Southlake)
She’s about to be offered there I think. Damn is downtown Dallas a hike from a lot of places that we’d like.

There's a train but if she's working odd hours (like most medical people) it may not be an option, I rode it downtown daily for several years and loved it.
Other thing, if she is working odd hours traffic wouldn't be that bad.
The North/South tollway is ok but an arse whipping during high traffic times.
The further out you get the cheaper it gets to live

Seems like you can’t really live in Dallas proper unless you make 200k. You need a 700k house to not live in the hood and then good private schools (10k per kid at least?) if you don’t live in HPISD. You can live in Plano or whatever but even that sucks and how the hell do you commute downtown? 45 minutes?
Seems like if you don’t get a job in fort worth you’re fricked. Somebody explain this to me cause it doesn’t make sense
