The ones in question might be byproduct mounds and not pure bauxite.

Same here. Maybe there was actually some truth to it?

Same reason people buy next to railroad tracks.

Cheaper and then they bitch when trains scream through with horns blaring at 3am.

Tell that to the minority homeowners that bought cheap houses next to huge, existing petrochemical plants that has been there for 100 years, for a pittance (because they were next to plants) and then immediately scream that they are victims of environmental racism

I’m 96% sure it’s true. My dad worked an aluminum plant and that’s what he told me.

Truth be told it is absolutely an environmental event when that shite leaves beyond the levees. They don’t give a frick about maintaining it either because LALumina is a piece of shite. I worked there when it shut down and I was laid off. I imagine there’s a skeleton crew that’s still there to do god knows what. Prob sit on their asses all day long.

All that said, it’s on the homeowners to do some research prior to buying there. I mean who doesn’t pull up satellite imagery of their potential home ahead of time? Is that just me? The giant red blob should’ve been a red flag.

I know several people that live in that subdivision and can tell you that none of them were aware of that place before moving in.

The area in question is the waste from the facility. Bauxite contains high concentrations of aluminum ore. We would take the bauxite and crush it up, add caustic to it, heat it up and settle out the mud. That solution then would get cooled and precipitate out the ore which you then wash and dry out in kilns to get calcined alumina.

That mud that you settle out from the process gets sent to those ponds. It’s waste that’s literally meant to stay there forever and it basically has no value at that point because all of the ore has been taken out of it. That caustic isn’t completely rinsed out of that shite either so it’s definitely not something you wanna play in.

After I got laid off from LAlumina I went to work at Noranda in Gramercy. They actually have a joint venture with someone that can take that leftover mud and extract rare earth minerals from it. They say the value of the metals in the wasted mud is actually worth more than the alumina they produce, but idk how far out that plant is from being built. And I don’t believe that every type of bauxite contains those same metals. It could just depend on where they imported that particular type from.

That “dust” is some high PH stuff, as well are those ponds. Worked there as well and couldn’t believe my eyes when pelican point and crossing were being developed. The developer, city parish, and real estate companies really took advantage of some unknowing home buyers. You can spray it all you want but in a 30+ mph wind , some is leaving.
