For sure. One of Phil's attempts today went right by the hole and ended up off the green. That would be a fairly regular occurrence for us amateurs.

also, mickelson has played this course how many times? the vast majority of these guys have played this course how many times? whether it be before this week, practice rounds this week, actual tournament rounds, etc.

so one of us is just gonna get to augusta, play the course for the first time, read the greens and their speeds for the first time, and shoot in the low 90s?

not a god damn chance.

In today's conditions, not at all, but today's conditions are rare for this tournament. Like once every 10 years rare. That's like asking what the average golfer would shot at Muirfield in the same conditions Tiger shot 81 at in 2002.

Augusta's unofficial rating is 78.1 & 137. My 3 most played courses are 73.2 &141, 74.7 & 142, and 76.3 & 136. Sorry, I just don't see 15 extra shots in those differences.

I just chuckled thinking about putting on those greens. I need to figure out how many strokes it would take me to get to 8 feet, then add 2-5 to that score

Phil had 20 feet and knocked it 14 yards past Grace's approach from 90 or so didn't make the correct level and ran off the front of the green. His chip did the same and landed back at his feet. As did his next chip

If I had 10 dollars for everyone who has come off the course and said basically, "I hit good putts. That's all I could fricking do. It's hard dammit," I could afford to go to the Masters next year.

Haven't read all the responses, but I will give my honest assessment.

On a good day, I can shoot 85 at courses like LSU and Webb Park in Baton Rouge (yeah yeah I know, I am a golf-baller!)

I honestly believe that I would shoot about 130 at Augusta...and likely more. The greens would chew my arse off and I don't hit irons well enough to make them stick on the green. I am not a long driver, but I do hit them fairly straight, so that would help...but my short game, which is normally pretty decent, would admittedly likely be my downfall at Augusta.

Just looked, my "home" course is 74 and 136. Is that good? What's it mean?

like whatever the penalty is when you break all your clubs and pass out drunk on the 11th hole.

Course rating, the smaller #, is the difficulty of a golf course in relation to a par golfer. Meaning, a player that plays to about a scratch at your course would shoot 74.

The slope is the score to which a "bogey golfer" would play. So bogey golf at your course would be 92. The difference between that 136 and 92 is the difficulty in greens, hazards, distance, undulation, etc. that a bogey golfer would face at your course. At least that is how I understand it.

Statistically, it's a way to evaluate the degree of difficulty a course plays to.

I originally guessed 135, but that was going to be my second guess...

I dunno dude....I'm afraid I would have to mother-frick the golf gods, my ball or my putter the first time I 7-putted from 20 feet

I believe it was in a Rick Riley book that Phil said he used to practice for putting at the Masters on a pool table.

Much like 07. I like it because Augusta is a very scoreable course when the conditions are normal. The way it has been though is like getting 2 US Opens in 1 year.

I'm guessing you average around 32 putts per round (1.75). If you averaged 2.75 putts per hole at Augusta, you are right at 100 as an 8 cap. It's not hard to fathom being 1-2 putts worse per hole there.

But Sunday the winds die down and if somehow we can get another sporty and Rory pairing that could become a classic final pairing.

Here's the thing about us scoring on the course in its condition today. It doesn't matter how "easy" it is tee to green. With the greens so fast, to score you HAVE to be in position on approaches and then on the green. With that wind, we would almost never be on the right position. With the greens THIS fast, it's game over.

Even when the pros are scoring well in an easy year, if they get out of position, they fudge the hole up. They're so damn good that keeping the ball in position in with easy conditions is sorta easy for them. The wind takes that ability away with the quickness. On this course, it's game over if you aren't locked the hell in on every single shot.

Last year...maybe an 8-10 handicapper could shoot a 90-95. I'm not sure. But I'm fairly certain that score would be unattainable in today or tomorrow.

off topic:

was just remembering how rickie finished top 5 in every major in 2014.

did you guys know that's only been done 6 times in the history of golf? and at the time, he was only the third man to do it.

jack nicklaus (1971, 1972)
tiger woods (2000, 2005)
rickie fowler (2014)
jordan spieth (2015)

rickie really is great. hope he can win one soon. but i hope a lot of guys that haven't won one can win one soon. rickie, dustin johnson, sergio

I want Rickie to win one, followed by Stenson. Danny Lee obviously, but that's just dreaming.

I'm thinking 120ish from where they are playing from. It won't be the length that gives me trouble. More the greens, uneven lies and pine trees and Rae's creeks.

I have no idea. I'm a plus one and played in college. It really all depends on how I'd handle the greens.
