Most of these resort areas are now like this (most). The natives have learned to exploit the tourists when they venture away from the protected areas. I remember going to Jamaica back in the 80's and heading up into the mountain areas to "enjoy" the local culture, you know? Now, I'm fairly certain if you tried that, there would be a search party looking for you a couple days later.

It is an extremely poor country. The will take advantage of you at best and a lot worse can happen.
You will be completely fine with a group or at your resort. The people are extremely friendly.
We did a catamaran around the island which was great. We also did a day tour that went to a sugar cane plantation, a cocoa bean place, and to Higuey to the basillica, which is beautiful.
Mostly, I'd recommend chilling at the resort and a planned excursion or two.

paradise island was neat. if I remember correctly it was about a 30 minute boat ride. although there was no bathroom, just drinking/snorkeling/diving

The Excellence PC is not couples only. It's adults only. Although I would say 95% of their guests are couples.
