Exactly. Tipping is for people making $2.13 an hour who depend on tips. Their salary is dependent on providing a service worthy enough to earn a tip. That's why they take a job with such a low pay: because they know they can make MORE than minimum wage with tips, if they hustle.

Some oil change guy making $20/hour can eat a bag of shite if he thinks he deserves a tip.

I just took my car up for an oil change at the dealership. The oil change was $85.00. I had to leave my car there for 3 hours to get a simple oil change. The dude wants a tip for a three hour oil change? NO.

I got but on a tip screen for dry cleaners, the emotional blackmail worked for the 1st time, but it won't work again. I tip SERVERS 20% unless the service is really bad, tip screens can GFY.

In most states all tips must go directly to the employees, however, the law becomes fuzzy when it comes to tipping a machine, the $$ might be going right in the back pocket of the owner.

I agree

That dude at least makes minimum wage

Actual servers do not. They make 2.13/hr.

Cool story

We needed another tipping thread on the OT for sure.

It would have to be a very special circumstance for me to bring my vehicle to a dealership for something as basic as an oil change.

I'm not tipping 20% just for grabbing a pre-made salad out of the cooler and ringing me up at the counter.

There is an exception: My local indie coffee shop starts making my order when my truck pulls up to the curb. That's clever and observant, and they deserve a tip for that. They treat my wife the same way, and they always give my daughter a coloring sheet when she comes in. The owner is behind the counter most days too, and his kids staff the joint too. And I know some of their customers don't treat them very well.

So I guess you need to re-evaluate this strategy if they know you and go the extra mile (and it's a local restaurant). That should be encouraged via generous tipping. Don't want to be known as a cheap tipper to the good ones.

Went to Beau Rivage buffet over the weekend for first time since Covid.

Paying with points cashier asked us to include tip. Had not even sat down. Said no.

Server brought two ice teas and never seen again. Food was crap, surprised us because use to be decent.

Guess service and food so bad they have to get a tip up front or won't get one.

Yea, I’m not tipping on an oil change. I worked at a TcBY when I was in high school and we definitely liked to get the 15 dollars of tips we’d get a day so Ive always tipped like a dollar for businesses like that but I’m not tipping for an oil change. Complain to your boss if you don’t get paid enough. You can’t expect people to tip for an oil change. Your wage should be included in the price.

I tip when the local servers do a great job. I admit to being a little cheaper when I'm out of town though. But I appreciate my local restaurants and I will tip very well there for good service. They mostly know me and they are usually very friendly.

But I don't appreciate the expectation that I tip 15% or 20% for ringing up a water bottle at the register. That's frustrating to see.

My time is way more precious then changing oil out of my car. I didn’t go to school for that kind of work

Also, I would tip a good fishing crew on a deep sea fishing trip.

My “raise hell” gauge would have been pegged out at this point. I’d be preparing a BBB complaint. They charge $85 for an oil change and want a tip? frick that.

The law that allows for lower-than-minimum wage compensation also requires employers to make up the difference if an employee's tips don't push their hourly compensation over minimum wage.

I'm not sure that is entirely true anymore.

ETA: not entirely sure about that being the motivation for why they take those jobs.
