I drove mine like that for 5 years. Sold it to somebody else in January and it's still going.
My Avalanche did it for a few years and around 70k miles. (Had 100K on it when it started) It doesn't hurt anything, just sounds bad for a few minutes.

To add, if you are out of warranty never go to the dealership for anything other than cheap oil changes. They WILL try and bend you over.
Family has a dealership so I know how it works.

Make sure you reply to this thread after you decide what to do. I have same year and mileage so I'm curious.

The mechanic shop I use got GM to cover half of the lifter repair in my 2010 after I had a lifter go bad. It cost me $1800 if I remember correctly. Might of been less the more I think about it.

A bad lifter is an easy job. Find a shade tree guy to do it. It's basically a top end overhaul which can be done in a day
Eta: ignore all saying to unload it. You can get it like new for less than the down payment on a new truck. You have to own a seriously fricked up vehicle for it to make financial sense to get rid of it and buy new

Depends on the year as I believe on the earlier AFM's one has to pull the heads while it seems like the later ones you don't. Would have to look it up.

It's still running just ticks when cold, I could trade it in and dealer probably would never notice but I know it's only a matter of time.
My 2014 has done that since it had 20k miles on it and still going strong at 143k
Ignore it till it breaks or trade it in

Either way, pulling heads is not a big deal.
Look at it this way, a brand new engine out the box dropped in would probably be about 8k dollhairs. Down payment on a new truck would be around that, and then you get to pay $500 a month for 4/5 more years.
It takes some very fricked up shite to add up to $500 a month of repairs for 5 years.

Dealer want's 5k to rebuild or 9k for a new motor.
that shops a rip off, if all they are doing is a new cam and lifters (which is what it sounds like) that job shouldnt cost over $2k-$2.5k at the most. they are asking you to bend over

Run miracle oil through it and change the oil. I should free up the stuck lifter.

Just get rid of it. It's not smart in my opinion to keep vehicles past 80k+ miles. Let someone else deal with the other problems that are soon to arise.

Mine is starting to sound like a diesel when I give it gas. I would totally ignore it if it was just the normal GM cold tick but I can tell it’s getting much worse and I’m not too far from it breaking down completely.

I wonder if you could find someone to Change the lifters and cam only.
Probably don’t even need to change the cam, lifters only. The LS motors use a roller cam and lifters and the cam rarely shows any wear, unless a roller on the bottom of a lifter came apart. Usually, the hydraulic internals in the lifter fail. Change out the roller lifters and put back in service. 100k Miles is nothing on a 5.3.

You need to try shell rotella 15w40 your oil is to thin to prime up your lifters trust me give it a shot

Find you a junkyard motor.
Replace.
Sell.
Get new truck.
I can't say this is the worst advice but if you want to keep the truck I'd find the best motor mechanic around and let him rebuild it. If the best is the dealer then so be it but if not find the best guy bc he'll make it better than new.

Another option for you is to get a Jasper motor put in. They come DOD deleted, and come with a tuner to make sure the computer is tuned for the delete.
4 year 100,000 Nationwide warranty on the motors. I think I paid like $3800 for mine.

quote:yep, had the same problem with my yota thundra (2000 model) at 385,000 miles..pissed me off...however, bought 3 since then and at 300,000 just trade them in..good luck.
My 2014 Sierra with 5.3 motor has 110k on it and has a bad lifter in it. Dealer want's 5k to rebuild or 9k for a new motor. At this point trying to decide if it's best to move on with something else or rebuild it? Anyone had a similar situation?
