'Ghost' students have become an issue, making up 50% of enrollment at some schools

Ghost students
Across America’s community colleges and universities, sophisticated criminal networks are using AI to deploy thousands of “synthetic” or “ghost” students—sometimes in the dead of night—to attack colleges. The hordes are cramming themselves into registration portals to enroll and illegally apply for financial aid. The ghost students then occupy seats meant for real students—and have even resorted to handing in homework just to hold out long enough to siphon millions in financial aid before disappearing.
The scope of the ghost-student plague is staggering. Jordan Burris, vice president at identity-verification firm Socure and former chief of staff in the White House’s Office of the Federal Chief Information Officer, told Fortune more than half the students registering for classes at some schools have been found to be illegitimate.

Santiago Canyon wound up dropping more than 10,000 enrollments representing thousands of students who were not really students, said Kim. By spring 2025, ghost student enrollments had dropped from 14,000 since the start of the spring term to fewer than 3,000.

that number should be zero.
do they not require them to physically show up and present a valid ID?
nevermind..higher ed...

And public universities keep building to teach liberal arts.

Easy solution.
Get rid of all federal financial aid.
Banks will figure it out before they loan millions to fake people.
And college tuition will plummet.
Win-win.

I am sure the universities are diligently working to stop these "ghost" students and their sweet sweet financial aid disbursements.

financial aid
Most don’t pay out financial aid, they just cut the cost and call it aid. If you never write a check it’s hard to get scammed.

This ain’t the 1960s on the parade grounds anymore baw. Class registration is all online

When I started college, you were required to show up in person to meet with an advisor before you could register. And that was every semester.

I'm a professor at a University here in Louisiana, and we have to do what's called the 9th day census. We have to submit a report and identify any student that has not showed up and participated in class 9 days after classes begin. That individual is then dropped from the class. I haven't had a single issue of a "ghost" student in my classes yet.
I will say that some students sign up for extra classes and choose sections with popular professors even though they do not need that class. Those sections typically fill up very quickly. They then sell their seat to another student and coordinate the drop and add with each other before payment is made.

Criminals taking advantage of government programs? Unheard of.

Our students aren't smart enough to do this? Now THAT's a sad comment on our education system.

still i would think at some point in the process, an actual student has to show their ID IRL before they're officially in the system

For online curricula? Why would they?
But I agree with this.

Just get rid of loans altogether.
The only reason college is this expensive is because students can borrow unlimited sums of cash, which frees up universities to jack up tuition to whatever they want.

This started with the GI Bill. Direct student loans started in the 50s but then became government-backed and often subsidized student loans through private banks in 1965. The subsidies were related to the difference in interest rates.
Pretty much still the same thing, subsidized and unsubsidized student loans as well as subsidized and unsubsidized parent plus loans. Just a lot more students get them now, and a lot more have little or no intention of ever paying them off.
