I’m sitting in the waiting room for a visit to my cardiologist and naturally I’m the youngest person in here by probably 30 years. Everyone in here either moves slowly, breathes heavily, uses a walker or cane, is on oxygen, or just generally is decrepit. Is this what we all have to look forward to when we get old? I realize many of these people are that way because they obviously have a health issue but I do too and am far too active to ever believe I’ll be that way one day. What’s terrifying is I know damn well many of the men in here felt the same way when they were my age.

What are some ways to prevent this? Regular exercise? Cardio or strength training - or both? Man, I’d be depressed if I ever get like these poor bastards.

You’ll be dead before you hit their age. Don’t worry about it.

You can never prevent getting old…

Thing is, if you’re in great shape, pray to God you have a sharp mind..

If you are old and have to ask "how to prevent this" you should just give up.

My pawpaw smoked like a train until he was 70, eats like a fricking horse, but stays active. Crusty old bastard still cuts his grass at age 92.

You can help steer it, but it’s mostly genetics IMO.

It sounds like they need to pull themselves up by their bootstraps and tough it out.

yea if you sit on your arse and do nothing, especially after retirement.

ummm yes

#1) get 8 hours of restful sleep a night
#2) eat health with a protein based diet that limits processed foods and keeps you in a slight caloric deficit
#3) get 10k steps a day
#4) strength train 3 times weekly...truely train on a legit program.

plenty of studies that show those 4 things lead to much much longer lifes and much better quality of life as we age.

most here wont do that though because bmi doesnt apply to them as they lifted in high school 30 years ago.

Im 39, and i feel ya lol. No heart issues yet. But history of asthma is something that worries me as I age. I keep in decent shape, gym few days a week and active as i can be. But could def be healthier with diet and more cardio as opposed to weights alone. It does suck getting older, but there is no way to go back. Just enjoy each day at a time

My advice: get on this dude's email list.

You don't have to buy anything he's advertises, but you'll get some pretty good tips. And there's a lot of pretty good free stuff on his site.

ETA: his mantra is good nutrition (low carb/healthy fat/moderate protein, zero processed foods), intermittent fasting, and short, high-intensity weight training.

Obviously genetics plays a large part, but you can do a lot to give yourself a better chance of a longer, healthier life if you're willing to commit to it.

Life is a gift. At least they made it that far. Many don’t. Life is what you make of it at any age.

At 47, I have the same experience at the cardiologist. We have a family history of heart disease so I go every 5-10 years to get checked. As far as avoiding that fate, DO NOT SMOKE, eat healthy, and stay active. Cardio is critical IMO.
