Exactly why I stopped going to them when I traveled singly.

It's pretty common, for my company you don't really travel until you get to a certain level. Then you make the office tour going to the various locations for leadership summits and junk. I'm not high up enough (senior VP and C level) to do the traveling but when they come to town I'm part of the meetings.
It's always 3-4 AM in the hotel bar for all of the traveling crew, then watching them pass around a bottle of ibuprofen in the meeting the next morning.

I 100000% believe it.
I have never been weird about going out solo even here at home (and still do it plenty), and I've never come close to being hit on in a regular bar or restaurant at the aggressive level people do in hotel bars when they're traveling for work. And it's not just men! The women traveling for work drinking in those bars are just as bad with the men.
If I don't feel like being out-out in the city, I'll grab a drink and have it on my room balcony or whatever.
I remember being in .. hmm.. San Diego maybe? And we stayed at a large hotel hosting a conference. Last night there, I had a really nice restaurant I wanted to visit while in town. I texted my boss in case she wanted to come with me, but she decided to hang at the hotel and have a drink.
10 minutes into me being there, she texted me that nevermind she was on her way because the hoards of men getting ready for whatever conference was happening in the hotel the next day were insufferable to be around.

I pretty much lived my life on the road/air as I would at home except for visiting the sights and sounds of the ambient culture.
There was nothing I could get fired or blackmailed over.

Our annual company conference is in New Orleans each year, I don't mind going to town and playing tourist a bit but never get carried away. A few years ago the company had to put a policy in place that the Friday & Saturday meeting portions had mandatory attendance complete with scannable badges and all because there was a big issue with the out-of-state attendees getting too trashed and missing all the work stuff
Even still its pretty easy to spot a few each year struggling to hold it together in the mornings.

I'm a social drinker even at home, so definitely not anti drinking by any means, but one of the best work trips I took was when I was on antibiotics I wasn't able to drink on.
I just so happened to do a huge stretch of coastal California on this trip, and I got the best daily runs in during this time. Actually got to take my rental car out on scenic drives since I wasn't concerned about drinking and driving. It was awesome.

You should see what some attendees of a law enforcement conference look like first thing in the morning.

don't party, but I will hit the lobby bar for a couple cocktails and go to bed on time.

I took the family to a Spurs game because my boss has courtside tickets but just for 3. My wife stayed at the hotel. She went and grabbed food at the hotel bar to go to the room and I told her about the “culture.”
She texted me in the middle of the game and said I was dead on and there were definitely traveling guys that were looking to do some sexual harassment.
ib: she cheated on me

Why do some people feel the reigns are off on a work trip and party their tails off?. I couldn’t imagine sitting in meeting rooms, conferences, or airports feeling like complete trash. Those places can be miserable enough.
When I was traveling around 80% (a few decades ago), because I was representing corporate...everybody wanted to take me out at night and talk about stuff informally. They would take me to the best restaurant/bar in town...the best restaurants were always Steakhouses, Italian Places, or some other type of heavy meal. Nobody wanted to take me to a place famous for their salads. It was always food and drink on the heavy side...and I had to do a ton of work to keep from blowing up like a balloon...but it was all about building the network connections.
BTW...vasoconstrictors/decongestants before bed seemed to really help prevent hangover headaches the following day. It seems counterintuitive, but a shot of Nyquil before bed was standard routine by one of the road warriors I worked with back in the day. He had an MS in Toxicology, and seemed to have a lot of practice.

yeah. unless i'm in the middle of some series I'm streaming or something, i'll always have a drink in the bar or lobby while i clear out email or read. staying in the room is incredibly depressing.
but i don't sit at the bar by myself like a creep. i set at the dining area like a respectable lonely business man.
never had any sort of interaction that my wife would disapprove of with a woman but had some humdinger conversations with fellow travelers that lasted till 2 in the morning.

That was 100% my experience as well. Local places alone are way easier to relax than a hotel bar. I dont like eating or drinking alone in my room but forget the hotel bar.

Saw that happen at a Buckhead hotel bar. Total hotel bar scene was out of hand.

Depends on the work and depends on the trip. Going out drinking with a client/customer can be pretty awesome.

The last work trip I did was some time ago, and yep, did have a few when we all went out. And woke up with this little blond DM of ours.
