GM to slash production, cancel some car models

LINK

General Motors Co will cut car production, stop building several slow-selling models, and slash its North American workforce, its biggest restructuring in North America since its bankruptcy a decade ago.

quote:

GM plans to halt production next year at three assembly plants - Lordstown, Ohio, Hamtramck, Michigan, and Oshawa, Ontario.

A few GM sedans are being canceled. Some are shifting production to Mexico.

General Motors execs think that the US auto market will shrink between 2020 and 2023. Ford is also canceling all sedans.

Well, they are pricing their vehicles out of the range of what most can afford.

Hmmm, I wonder if there’s something that GM sees as a problem that these three plants have in common...???

It's more the fact that crossovers are way more popular than cars and the fact that new cars last way longer than they did even 10-15 years ago.

Increases in urbanization and availability of public transportation / ride sharing as well.

Demand for personal vehicles in America is way down.

If they made better cars they might sell them.

Both are definitely part of this.

Their best selling vehicles are the Silverado and Equinox.

You aren't wrong.

The plants that will cease production next year are Detroit-Hamtramck, Warren Transmission, Lordstown Assembly in Ohio, Oshawa Assembly in Ontario and Baltimore Operations in Maryland. Work will stop, but plants will not officially close. The future of those facilities will be determined during 2019 negotiations with the United Auto Workers.

nah, i dont think people want to spend 50k on a car. Im sure electric/hybrids are more appealing to the younger generation. Old people and their guzzlers are dying out. Few people actually want truck nuts and big baw vechiles

I think it's just the opposite. People want SUVs and trucks. The 3 best selling vehicles in the US are F150, Silverado and Ram.

Truck sales are declining bigly.

The demand for SUVs is actually demand for crossovers.

Big gas guzzling suburbans, expeditions and land cruisers are not in demand.

Ford is no longer producing small cars.

Now GM follows suit.

They see the market being electric cars and suvs.

Toyota has been relying on rental fleets and taxi companies to move their Camry sedan. Sales are down for the new Accord too.

Rav4 and CR-V have replaced the Camry and Accord as the hottest sellers for both of those companies. Just like the Equinox has replaced the Malibu and Cruze as the most popular Chevrolet.

People want crossovers and trucks.

Honestly, if you need a commuter car, it's hard not to go Camry, Accord/Civic or Jetta.

frick domestic commuter cars.

We do one thing right, outrageous horsepower muscle cars and trucks.

I don't think you can support that with evidence. Go on any car lot and try to negotiate prices of those vehicles. They barely come off the price because they are selling every one they make.

Honda or Toyota won’t have a problem selling their cars. These pile of junks gm are putting out are on dodge neons level.
