Dying in a hospital bed doesn't seem so bad...

I worked for a power company in Colorado and used to seriously worry about hantavirus traipsing around fields and outbuildings.

Had a mouse jump out of the base of a fence gate in the middle of nowhere once spraying piss everywhere that little fricker.

if anything the wife should have had a contact in case of emergency to at least check on him in his state

I loved Hackman as an actor, but its come out he had issues with his dad and he rarely sees his kids. Its unfortunate, very sad.

My parents 90+ year old asian neighbor lives by herself and picks up every single pine needle from her yard and driveway every day by hand. I don't think its surprising at all they lived alone. People coming to knock on the door and no one answering is not abnormal at all. Who is going to enter the property without permission?

Its more sad they didn't have a 3rd person like a kid or grandkid that didn't check on them more often or have someone they forced to work with them.

I understand that you can’t post without being a complete arse. No, I didn’t miss it, my post was just as surprise.

That's as sad as we all knew it was going to be. I'm shocked at 95 he lasted a full week.

Sounds like they lived in a gated community. The pest control guy went to the neighborhood security when they wouldn't answer the door. I don't think folks could come and go to their house without going through security.

None of it makes sense. No housekeeper, no nurse, nor gardener coming through. But they had the money and she was out and about often. For a small, elite neighborhood it’s surprising the gate house didn’t notice her absence. It shouldn’t have taken a random pest control visit to discover this.

What a sad ending. Hackman had advanced Alzheimer's and no family checked on him within a week? Does he have kids?

His wife was in her 60s. He still got around fairly well and I’m sure his kids thought that she could take care of him.

I read that they symptoms of the virus start out like the flu, so perhaps she thought she had the flu, but why not see a doctor when you have a 95 year old husband with heart disease.

Also read that there was evidence of rodents in some other buildings on the property, but the risk in the house was described as "low".

It appears Hackman could get around. His cane was found near him. I also read that he was not dehydrated, but he had no food in his stomach.

Did no one even call the wife periodically to check on him?

I read earlier that the wife's mother has Alzheimer's and I think lives in another state. Her caretaker said the wife would call her mother about once a month, but they hadn't heard from her since October. The mother was told she passed away, but the person being interviewed said she forgot shortly after that. She has a pretty bad case of the disease.

The whole situation is baffling to me.

He must have some sorry arse kids because they hadn’t checked on their 95 year old, Alzheimer riddled dad for over a week. Or he’s 95 and they are old too with their own health problems?
Maybe. It's hard to deal with older folks like that, though. If his wife wasn't willing to have him placed somewhere or hire full-time care, the kids would have to go to court to push the issue and what would they claim? As long as she was sane, there wasn't a lot that could be done. If she wasn't, then you have to humiliate both her and your dad in court to prove it. Also could be that her issues were relatively new and the kids didn't know or weren't aware.

Was the current wife a homewrecker? That could explain the kids not coming around too.

Lesson here is be careful who you marry.

He and his first wife were married for 30 years, divorcing in 1986. He said in an interview that he did not leave the first wife for the second wife. All accounts indicate he and the second wife had a good marriage and she cared for him well. Have no idea of her relationship with his children.
