No bills and good money... Why wouldn't they do that if their parents are ok with it? lol

You don't understand it, which is the least surprising news of the day

People like me? What are you talking about? My first place when I came home from the army was a 20 year old trailer that I rented until I could buy my first home. And that home was no mansion either. I didn’t buy my nice big brick house in the nice sub-Division until 2006 when I was almost 36 years old.

There is nothing wrong with renting a modest place when you’re young and just getting started in life.

I wish I would've stayed at my parents longer and saved some money. Looking back at it,if I was smart, I should've stayed there for about two or three years after acquiring my first job out of college. I could've just stacked my 401k and created an emergency fund while under their roof. They offered, but I was young and dumb didn't listen to them. I was adamant of having my own space.

you're welcome. Now would you quit making excuses for your life's failures and get a place of your own?

I guess it comes down to a different mindset with younger generations now compared to past generations. Back then young people wanted to move out and have their independence as soon as possible.

What factors go into this changing mindset is a good question I suppose. I’d image it has a lot to do with different parental styles now compared to then. Parents were more strict and required their children to follow their rules so long as they lived under their roof. Thus, as their kids reached adulthood, the kids were ready to leave the nest. Parents are more permissive now so kids see no need to move out since they already have their independence with the added benefit of not having the normal expenses of adulthood.

I see nothing wrong with 18-24 still living at home.

On the other hand, unless they are a caregiver to an infirm parent, a 30-34 year old should be on their own.

18-34 is a huge age spread and doesn’t tell us much.

I have a feeling this mainly affects higher cost of living cities.

Someone in Shreveport can survive on $10 an hour.

I met some guys who were barely millennial from the Chicago area who said a lot of college grads live at home because of the expensive housing.

Yeah, I think this is a very good way to put it. Like in my mind if I am getting along with my parents and can enjoy a social life from my home then saving money for an extra couple of years is ideal.

Personally, I am in grad school and have no extra money so staying at home in the summer and even possibly a year or two after graduation would be financially great for me.

Well I'll raise my hand as guilty.

23 years old, recent college grad starting a new job and just moved back in with the parents.

They offered, so I figured may as well move back and pay off my student debt within a year to better set me up for the rest of my life.
Plan on moving out before I'm 25 years old. I'm not proud of the situation, but I figured it was a smart move financially.

Don't feel bad this is what I did. I was 25 when I had starting making plans to move out. However, Hurricane Katrina hit and I lost my job and was stuck at home for 3 more years. I was upset at the situation, but looking back I was fortunate I didn't move out too soon because I would have lost everything.

Then I worked at Best Buy full time while in Engineering School.

Bull and shite. Average prices? Maybe. Real prices of starters? No way.

Mortgage loans are what, 5 percent? Mine was 15. That means what would be a 1000 payment today would be 3000 back then. Money is a third of the cost it was.

My first home was 103,000. Your telling me that you can’t find a starter home under 309,000?

You could get a house like that for dirt cheap in a lot of places. So it definitely could be someone’s first home.
