Your story does seem unlikely because the state inspector, pump installer, and anyone with the store would have to be in on the con.

This right here. Im in the industry. If its anything like how Louisiana weights and standards operates they will make annual or bi-annual inspection visits to check meter calibrations and give a certificate of approval. You can verify this by checking the sticker on the pump that has a year on it. If anything is out of code or compliance they put that pump out of commission until its fixed.

Not saying the station couldnt have paid an installer on the side for some shady work but seems unlikely and extremely difficult to keep a scam like that going.

Now what is more likely to happen is shady deal between station owner and delivery driver where they put regular in the premium tank. Thats less likely to get caught and been known to happen at some of these stations owned by lets say “non americans.”

You need to give a squirt of diesel at the end. Will really enhance the power

drive a Toyota Corolla so I guess I’ve been buying the premium unnecessarily.

A Corolla does not need premium. I think Toyota only calls for Premium in the Lexus models. They have the same engine as the Toyotas but are programmed for premium and get about 10 more HP.

Maybe the sportier and older models but my wife’s ES 350 takes 87 octane.

Es is in it's last year with the older V6 engine and doesn't require premium.

The 2.4l Turbo is Toyota's new workhorse. 265 hp on regular in the Highlander and Grand Highlander. 275 hp on premium in the NX 350, RX 350, and TX 350.

someone told me it’s the same as regular

Might want to cut that person out of your life.

Spoiler alert: that person does not draw sound conclusions, and probably doesn’t make good decisions.

Serious question, in a car that uses regular, would running a tank of premium having cleaning properties owing to the additive packages to make it worthwhile

Don’t care about her education. Stay in your lane give advice or subjects you have knowledge about. This is not of her best offerings.

Yours neither.

No, it would be too diluted for one tank to make a difference. If I had that concern, I’d buy a can of Seafoam and pour it in the tank when I’m about 1/4 tank of gas.

When I was in SoCal in the early 1990s, Shell refining employees told us to buy regular and we would be getting premium around August. Typically, tank farms ran out of regular unleaded at the end of the summer driving season, so they shipped premium for all grades which was more than enough.

Also, everyone I know who owns premium demanding Mercedes, puts regular into their tanks, including mechanical engineers.

Yep. As someone said earlier in this thread, modern cars (that call for Premium) can adjust their timing such that regular gas doesn’t pre-detonate and cause engine damage. The trade-off is that this causes the engine to produce less power and/or lower MPG.

Premium tolerates higher compression so it should be used if your engine calls for it. However, using premium in a lower compression engine that calls for 87 octane (“regular”) is a waste of money.

Depending on what your motor is. High end sports cars use higher octane.

Premium is only useful in engines that require higher octane such as sports cars and some luxury autos like Acuras. The engines will knock if using lower octane due to inappropriate ignition.

It may get you a little more MPGs (like 1 or 2) on some cars but not worth the price difference anymore. When it was $0.20 more per gallon, sure, but now it’s $0.90 or some shite like that.

Tier of gasoline is more important. Generally Tier 2 is okay and Tier 1 is best, but all it is are additives to the gasoline that help keep the engine clean and perhaps give a little boost.

In the end, no, it’s not worth it unless you have an engine that requires it.
