Need just a regular gas water heater, standard size, etc. Are they specific for a house type or pretty much they are generic and fit all homes? Anyone recommend a brand and model? Also how much am I looking to spend on the heater and a plumber to install?

Yes they are pretty much generic. It's rare if you see gas water heaters that are low boys. You're probably going to spend 500 in labor.

I'm assuming that you have gas to your house already. Sorry to have to say that but this is the OT

They’re pretty basic. How many gallons of water do you need, and where is it being installed (what space requirements). More efficiency is obviously better but will raise the price.

They are all pretty much standard, unless you live in a mobile home. I think they still have to be sealed combustion if so. There was a law passed a few years ago, that basically required more insulation around the tanks, so most models got a little fatter. I tell you this, because if your water heater is in a closet/cabinet, getting the same gallon capacity water heater as you had in the space may be an issue. Most residential water heaters are the 30 or 40 gallon variety, and honestly there isn't a ton of difference between the brands. It's kind of a Ford/Chevy thing. I've had good luck with Rheem/Ruud, but I'm on year 8 with no trouble out of my latest water heater. It's an AO Smith.

Find a plumbing wholesaler. They'll have the water heaters in stock, and will usually know a plumber who can install it as well.

If you've already got gas, you should consider tankless. More in up-front costs, but the lifetime savings are worth it (not to mention the endless hot water supply).

Where will it be installed? This factors in labor cost. If it will be installed in an attic, might be a little more. And make sure it will fit in attic openings. Newer models are wider than older models due to extra insulation. Some 50 gallon models might not fit thru 21.5 inch attic opening.

Depends on where it is.

If its in the attic, frick that, well worth paying somebody $500 to deal with it.

If its in a closet near garage then yeah pretty easy diy with a baw to help move heater.

We replaced ours last weekend. This was my first time replacing one. Did it myself and it was pretty easy.

Ours was ground level. If in the attic I would have paid someone to do it.

They were so much better before they had all the safety features. I think most fail because the glass fuse (same thing a sprinkler uses) fails.

Personally I say fix them unless they are leaking.
Repairs are very simple.

I believe the tanked ones max out at 50-55gal now. For bigger, you have to get a high efficiency one ($$$$), or you can get an extra tank to use as a booster.

The feds are pushing people to either go tankless or heat pump, both of which cost more money to output less hot water.

It's a pretty easy install, and you can save yourself a boatload by DIY'ing.

They are easy to install. But if you are switching one out, know that the old one will weigh a ton- you will need at least two people and a two wheeler to move it. I had my sons and their football teamates wrassle it out.

I had a tankless. Opted not to do one in our new house.

Took forever for the water to heat up and even though they’re gas, the tankless has an electric pilot/starter. So no hot water when power was out unless I ran an extension cord from our generator to the unit in the attic.

My gas bill is nominally ($3-5) more a month with the tank heater.

Water heater itself will run you about $450 depending on size, unless you're looking for tankless.

So to drain it do you cut off water supply to tank and just run the hot water ?
