Never had a stihl. Have an Echo, and it starts on the second pull every time. Have had it for about 5 years.
I always went cheap on trimmers and they'd die in 2 or 3 years.
I didn't even get one of the top Echo's. I got the cheapest straight shaft one.

My echo blower starts on the 2nd pull as well every time. Had it for 3 years, and i use that thing all the time b/c of the constant need to clear my courtyard area from the piece of shite crete myrtle and overhanging river birch trees i have.

Had them both. They both lasted about 3 years. My 2 cents, go to Wal Mart and buy the $89 red one (murray I think it is) with a straight shaft. When it breaks in 2-3 years put it by the curb and go buy another one. Run the pre mixed fuel out of the can in it that you get in the lawn and garden section. Served me well the past few years.

Both Echo and Stihl straight shaft are good.
I now have a Hitachi/Tanaka and like it too.

Sometimes mine takes 10 pulls because I forgot to reset the stop switch.

Either or. Go straight shaft.

Have an echo trimmer and blower and they're very reliable. That trimmer eats like a sonofabitch.

i have an echo blower that is about 15 years old. it has never had any maintenance other than spark plug change. still runs great. i have a husqy trimmer that needed maintenance right off the bat, but has otherwise run great. next time, i'll probably get an echo though.

Do yourself a favor and get a husqvarna 326ls. It is fast becoming the standard in the lawn care business. It has the highest power to weight ratio of any on the market and starts every time. I've had em all. Stihl, echo, you name it and for line trimmers, the husky is the best

Stihl by far but if not, echo... as long as you don't let them sit around too long you should have problems with either one.. just keep up with the routine maintenance and you'll enjoy either product.. like others have said, get a straight shaft

May be a bit much for just around the house though

Stihl's two stroke engines are so smooth and powerful

I have a Stihl F90 that I put a Speedfeed head on.

It's a beast. Strong all throughout the power band. Most of my trimming can be done half-throttle. Nice to have the extra power when I need it. I have a little bamboo on the back side of my place. When it starts creeping in, this thing plows it right down.

Just treat your fuel and/or use 100% gas. They sell premixed fuels for a pretty penny if you prefer.

Husqvarna 2-stroke, straight shaft for me.

The Echo SRM-230 is the highest rated straight shaft trimmer by Consumer Reports. I bought one a few months ago at Home Depot.

It starts very easily and has much more power than my 4-year-old Husqvarna. The speed line system makes winding new line a cinch.

I would highly recommend it.

Husqvarna trimmers are just Wal-mart Poulan trimmers with an orange cover.
