I was spoiled with my Jeep because my winch had an air compressor on it. Within two months of being back in the US I found myself needing an air compressor. Bought a cheap one after looking at a few gas station compressors. Why do stations even charge for compressed air? Are they making windfall profits from it?

That’s why i bought a portable compressor that i keep in my trunk. $20 and it’s saved my arse throughout the years. Plugs into the cigarette lighter.

Seriously though. I've always wondered why people don't just buy their own air compressor and instead use the gas stations. I consider it to be as essential as a pair of jumper cables (or jump starter).

Why do they charge for sunflower seeds?

compressors are expensive.
cheap compressors break all the time.
compressors are one of the most inefficient machines ever made when it comes to electricity input for power output.

Pro tip-

Every truck stop has free air hoses around the back where the big trucks go. It is usually at the first pump closest to the terminal building.
Regardless of whether they have the crappy pay to play pumps out front.

Good to know, I’ve never realized that.
Also for those looking to buy a compressor, spend a little more and get one that has clips to attach directly to the cars battery. Generally speaking you’ll get more CFM rating.

The last time I went to a gas station to fill up my tires, I drove to 5 gas stations before I found one with a working air hose. Bought a plug-in portable compressor and solved that problem.

Go to tires plus they check air pressure for free and fill it up if needed.

This is true, however the ones I’ve seen still require you to have your own air chuck.
Some have the coupler for short stems, some for long stems. Good to have one of each.

Gas station near my hood has a free one that doesn't have a box. Looks like the hose is coming out of the ground, it's never broken but there is usually someone there at all times so you have to wait.
