I think only an idiot would deny that a caloric deficit leads to weight loss. At the same time, only an idiot would oversimplify it that much. There is clearly a difference between eating at a deficit while consuming nothing but processed junk food as opposed to eating nutrient dense whole foods. Whether you like keto or vegan or whatever other fad diet, the thing they all have in common is the avoidance of processed foods made almost entirely of refined carbs and added sugars

Hulk? Didn’t you and I have it out years ago when I had the audacity to mention eating potatos?

You and Cad said I should just eat the butter and sour cream straight! You have modified since then?

I agree. No where did I say to eat junk food. It is unsustainable and will likely lead to medical complications from nutrient deficiencies. All I said is that you don’t need some bullshite fad diet to lose weight if that is your goal. Eat less than you burn with quality food and you will see results

Not even reading that Great Wall of text. All I needed to see was Gary Taubes. 100% quack. That guy has done more damage to public health than the corona virus.

I am not reading that, but why does it have to be one or the other? Medically, not knowing anything about this, the common sense side would say that for a very small percentage it could be hormone problem... maybe.. but for the most part it is calories.

There are some merits to keto but it is not magic and it's not all-healing.

I don’t know why people want to argue the laws of physics. The human body will burn (x) calories just by being alive, RMR, resting metabolic rate. That number is different for everyone, you can guess and get somewhat close, but everyone’s metabolism is different. That said, weight loss is physics, calories consumed/calories burned. If that is a deficit, you lose weight, if it is a surplus, you gain weight. A calorie is unit of measure, not voodoo. If you eat 500 more calories of lean meats and vegetables than you burn, you will gain weight. If you eat 500 calories less of ice cream and cookies than you need, you will lose weight. It’s physics. Now.......for overall health, that’s a different story. The correct amount of calories in a well balanced diet is the ideal. Exercise is not necessary for weight loss, but it certainly helps your overall health. I don’t know why this is controversial at all.

Funny how hormones can be controlled/manipulated with diet and exercise

(Not sure if that was mentioned in OP, tldr)

Yeah. That was the whole point of it ( not saying it’s right but that was the point of the article )

We have had this argument a million times, you can't prove shite and we have tons of studies showing that model is complete bullshite and overall calories then protein is what matters when things are equated.

Ummmm......yes, we have had those and we've gone round and round. We've gone over many topics at length, but you've never disproven any of it. Stating you have doesn't make it true.

The bolded is always a complete waste of time. I know where you get it from but since when has any ever been able to match their calories in the real world? You know what happens in those studies? The low-carb group typically has to overeat to match the calories because the calories they consume make them feel fuller. Hey, however, I am a protein fan.

Anyways, this whole thing is a waste of time anyway. No one is going to change their mind. Nothing has changed. It is why I've steered clear of the health board these days. Nothing is new.

I don’t think he is denying that a caloric deficit leads to weight loss. But what if insulin resistance leads to a lower RMR? Then you would have to have an even larger caloric deficit in order to maintain the same level of weight loss. So, like you said, everyone is different. Weight loss isn’t a one size fits all solution. For people that are insulin resistant, a low carb diet may increase their RMR which will help lead to a caloric deficit and, eventually, weight loss.

Pretty sure people who eat 3000 calories a day weigh more than those who eat 1500 calories a day.

Have you ever looked at process efficiency?

Two people eat 2,000 calorie diets. One absorbs 1,000 calories, the other absorbs 1900.

Can they count the calories in their Poop to see who has a more calorie rich crap?

Yeah, it's probably been 8 years since I was all aboard the keto train.

If the argument is "people eating keto tend to eat less because keto curbs hunger" I think there's some validity to that, though I can't recall any studies, just anecdotal personal experience. That doesn't disprove CICO, and where Taubes and others lose me is all of the mental gymnastics of hormones. Hormones obviously play a role but it all ultimately comes back to CICO.

It’s. Still. Calories. People should eat is any way that they can adhere to. THAT, is the real problem, adherence. If someone can eat a low carb diet, maintain proper macronutrient balance, and ADHERE to it, fantastic! In the end, it’s just math, calories in/calories out.

Small point. A "vegan" diet is just devoid of animal products. It's not necessarily low in processed foods or added sugars. You might be thinking of a whole food, plant-based diet.
