The problem you have is that when coming north the US Border Patrol will read you your rights, drive you to a heated and A/C jail and serve you food. When going South, the Mex / Cubans will shoot you for crossing illegally into their country.

The previous law allowed you to earn good time at a rate of 3 days for every seventeen spent in custody (earliest possible release after serving 85 percent of the sentence).
Under the new law effective Nov 1, 2017, he would be able to earn good time at a rate of 1 day for every 3 days spent in custody (earliest possible release after serving 75 percent of the sentence).
He would be parole eligible after 65 percent of his sentence.
