quote:

The future of the most popular type of banana could be in question, thanks to a fungal disease that experts say could send them into extinction.

The disease, called Panama Disease, infects the banana tree's roots and kills it by disabling its ability to absorb water, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

Ever 5 or so years this story is pushed out again. I have been hearing about this since 1980s.

Little known fact:

Discussion of the characteristics of this fungus was the genesis of the Van Halen song “Panama”.

That’s why Noriega surrendered.

I grow some of the Gros St Michel variety. It was the one grown commercially before the present day Cavendish. The one that “banana “ flavor is patterned after.

Well I mean it’s still an on going issue. It’s not like it’s hypothetical fear mongering. Something similar already happened, and it’s been on a knife’s edge for a repeat.

The problem is that the cultivar is essentially genetically identical. So no evolution or ability to breed additional resistance.

The point is that it is fear mongering.

I thought Panama Banana Disease would've been about something else.

Title of the article:

quote:

Could a fungal disease cause the most common type of banana to go extinct? Here's what experts say

If it was not fear mongering, then they would have included in the title the answer, which is "Experts say that it won't."

An expert quoted in the article

quote:

predicts with certainty that there will be a solution before banana crops are severely impacted and consumers see shortages.

I mean a lot of banana trees have already had to be cut down because of it.

Similar issue is happening with citrus, particularly orange trees in Florida.

OK.

You may think that this deserves breathless articles every few years describing how banana tress are on the verge of being "wiped out". I just don't know that I do.
