When I die, y'all can show up in basketball shorts and flip-flops for all I care.

I really don't think the person you are there for will have any complaints. Just the other visitors.

Last one I went to was one of my wife's great uncles. It was in the middle of July in south Alabama, about 90 degrees and swampy. Of course since we were family we went to the graveside service as well. He was in the Army and Navy, and had a full military ceremony at the grave site. Those poor young soldiers out there in full dress uniforms were sweating like crazy. The pants on my suit looked like I had been doing yardwork in them they were so sweaty. All the men took off the jackets and loosened their ties. That was the first time in my life I questioned wearing a dark suit to a funeral. The deceased would have loved to have been buried in his overalls. Plenty of family from out in the country were wearing boots, jeans, and polos. It all depends on the person you are remembering and honoring.

Since then attitude and reverence matter.
Yep.
While it is possible to dress disrespectfully, more often than not, your behavior trumps all.

I attended a funeral in east Texas last week.
That's your problem. Lived in North East Texas for almost four years, and people rarely dressed up for anything. My wife's friend passed away last year and we drove up for the wedding. Almost everyone there was in jeans or at best business casual.

Sounds fine to me. I absolutely hate wearing a suit and have never felt comfortable wearing one. Much rather be underdressed than overdressed.

Demise of respect and genteel manners is nothing new. The public has become much too...public.

Saying this is the trashiest part of your whole post

If there is a wake, it is okay to wear some slacks and a nice polo, but for the funeral, if it is a family member you wear a suit. If someone is attending the funeral and is coming straight from work then plans on going back, if they work in an office then whatever they are wearing is usually appropriate. Maybe put a tie on, but there will always be a few people who show up in jeans and their finest boots.

It's never ok to wear this. This is a horrendous result of office park middle managers interpreting business casual.

Jeans is trashy for a funeral, but not unusual for a wake when people are typically swinging by after work or on their lunch break. A lot of industrial workers, even typically white collar ones, work in jeans and a polo, so it's not that unusual for a wake.

I don't really know. As soon as I put the clothes on, I feel uncomfortable until I take them off. Not in the sense that something is poking me, etc. It's almost the same feeling one might get if you were in a crowded and you are only wearing your underwear. Just an uncomfortable feeling. I'd feel much more comfortable in jeans or shorts and a golf shirt. I could gladly go the rest of my life and not wear another suit, tux, or pair of khakis.

I'm 30 years old and wear suits to all funerals. If it's visitation the night before I'll wear maybe a button down with slacks but never a polo. That is somewhat disrespectful, IMO.

Checks out.
My now wife (city-slicker) was shocked that I didn't own a suit when we started dating. I basically had to buy an entire new wardrobe just to attend her family weddings and engagement parties. She simply couldn't (and still cannot) comprehend how people in Ascension Parish get by their entire lives dressing so casually.

I'm not from there, but I'm more of a city guy and my wardrobe is extremely casual. I own 1 black suit, 2 pairs of khakis, 2 ties, 1 plain white and 1 plain blue button up shirt.
I'd hate to live in a truly rural area.
