I guess I'm just getting old. I attended a funeral in east Texas last week. Got up and drove over 3 hours to get there for my 89 year old uncle's funeral.

I wore a dark suit and tie. At the funeral, I stuck out like a sore thumb as most everyone, including immediate family, wore jeans and polo shirts or short-sleeve button shirts. Only two of the pallbearers wore a suit.

When I was growing up, if there was a funeral, my parents taught us to respect the departed and to dress in a dark suit and dress. Granted, he was country. Raised timber, hay and soybeans and also built cabinets, but on paper, he was probably worth $7-8 Million or more.

Anyway, I was curious. Is it disrespectful, or just a sign of the times?

It depends, are you a visitor or the corpse?

I wouldn't wear jeans to a funeral, but I'd wear black or dark gray slacks and a darker colored polo shirt.

Never wear short-sleeve button shirts regardless.

You wear a suit and tie to weddings and funerals, with the sole exception being outdoor weddings when its too damn hot to wear a tie. In that case, suit and no tie is acceptable.

Anything else means you're a fricking trash dick.

Jeans at a funeral is one of the trashiest things you can do. At least wear some nice pants if you don't want to wear full suit

Being trashy and being culturally accepted are not mutually exclusive, but it's highly dependent on your point of view.

I've got family in south central Texas that wear short-sleeve plaid shirts and jeans to every formal function they've ever attended. Is it trashy? Probably. Is it disrespectful? No, I don't think it is, and they certainly don't mean any disrespect by their outfit.

This may have something to do with it.

Depends on how trashy the family is of the person who passed
