I’m sure it’s been talked ad nauseam but what’s the OTs take on buying a used Yukon XL vs. suburban vs. expedition max. Any years or models to stay away from?
3 kids, planning for at least another and already running out of space with a Pilot. Wife (no pics) is adamantly against mini van despite my insistence. No towing needs, just a good family toting vehicle. What yall got?

Look into the Sequoia too.

Yukon/Suburban with the 3L Duramax. Or older Sequoia with the 5.7L

It is dumb. People are so self conscious about what their vehicle says about them. Minivans were made for large families and are comfortable and practical. But their weak mind thinks there is a stigma about them.

Somewhat ironically, the minivan replaced the stigmatic station wagon for similarly nonsensical "image" reasons. The minivan was replaced, largely, by modular, car-based "SUV" vehicles which are nothing but sporty station wagons.

we rented a minivan while my wife’s vehicle was in the shop, drove it a couple weeks. It’s only the two of us plus dogs and it was awesome. Easily the most practical and comfortable large vehicle I’ve driven

There’s a reason why there’s too much inventory of these. Apparently Jeep can’t sell them.

Holy crap. How are they going to have normal activities, like playing sports or music/dance lessons? We had one child and he mostly did one sport at a time…it was/is still a lot. Can’t imagine 4 or 5.

Sounds like a minivan is the logical choice. Congrats on the new Yukon.

My wife didn’t want a minivan but for almost half the price of a large SUV we didn’t have another option. When a minivan is comfortable, practical, and much less expensive it’s hard to justify an 80k price tag for a large SUV with few options at that price point.

They had a 572 day supply of them at one point.
OP, we rented a Hyundai Palisades recently.
Pretty decent, and we put like 1k miles on it.
3 rows, self-driving, good economy, fair power.
Cruises at 85-90 pretty easily ( Utah)

We just went through this. Wife had a 4Runner, actually her 2nd 4Runner she has driven. She loves Toyota, so naturally we went to look at new Sequoia. To put in simply, it sucks. Toyota missed the mark big time with it. It looks great and the engine is powerful, but it starts to fail after that. The mpg is not good compared to V8 or diesel offerings, and comes with much more complexity with twin turbos and hybrid system. Front row of seats are great, but 2nd and 3rd row are among the worst in class. Their 3rd row is infamous already for lack of space and comfort, but the 2nd row was the shocker. The 2nd row is roomy enough, but seats do not slide forward and back. The 3rd row slides if those passengers need room, however that then kills whatever little storage space you have behind it. Storage is by far the worse with the battery pack under 3rd row. If the relocated the battery pack or offered a non-hybrid option, it would be a good contender though. Doug Demuro bought a Sequoia, so there is that at least.
We ruled out all the European option, because the are grossly overpriced and expensive to maintain
We came down to the big 3 US makers, as Americans are best at making large SUVs. The final two were the Wagoneer and Yukon. The Jeep was actually a favorite, however at the time the pricing was way to high and options were not aligned right in their packaging.
We went with a used 2023 Yukon Denali. Amazing amount of space in all three rows, ample power and on highway trips can get mid to upper 20s mpg. This one also came with Super cruise, which cannot recommend enough for those long trips. Still have the 4Runner and now my wife hates driving that one

Yukon XL for us. We liked the GMC/Denali better than Chevy options, although obviously they're comparable. We never looked at an expedition max but drove an expedition for a week recently and preferred the Yukon in most respects.
Those + minivans are your realistic options I think, especially if you have 3 or more in car seats and want to be able to travel without a carrier.
